• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

what type of fuel is best?

I stopped at the local spyder watering hole to fill up and noticed they had non-ethynol gas for a slightly higher price.

What do you think is better?

  1. 83 octane - Non-ethynol
  2. 83 octane with ethynol
  3. 87 octane with ethynol
  4. 93 octane with ethynol
  5. rocket fuel

I have never see below 87 octane in my life and I am now 41 that said the OM says not to use less than 87 octane, also rule of thumb non-ethynol will get better fule mileage. I use 87 non-ethynol it is 13 cents more than 89 with ethynol but get 4 more miles per gallon.

The manual on the RT says something like 92 preferred, 87 min. I would always opt for non-ethanol if available (regardless of the price) but would not go below the 87. 83 sounds like something for lawnmowers or farm stuff that is lower compression with lower detonation pressures - but I am no engine guru. I use the "premium" with 92 most times in our spyders.

Fortunately, I have two stations near me (next to one another) that both offer non-ethanol gas (I believe Conoco is always ethanol free) so they keep each other competitive, even with the ethanol stations. The mileage with all of my vehicles has improved with the non-ethanol, but the Spyder's improvement was the most significant. Of course I happened to start using the non ethanol while still in the Spyder break-in period so it likely would have improved anyway. Beside just the improvement in MPG, ethanol is hydroscopic, which as long as you burn it up quickly is probably not a big issue, but if for some reason it needs to sit up for awhile, could be a problem.

We are sensitive to ethanol gas in boats too. Not so much the affinity for water - remember - every can of HEET you ever used is also alcohol - but as the ethanol breaks down, the byproducts are BAD for a lot of engine parts :banghead: So while fresh ethanol may not be bad for the engine (which is what they use as the argument to force the stuff down our tanks) - what it decomposes into is NOT GOOD for the engine.

If you come through Chattanooga, there are numerous places where you can get 87-89-93 non-ethanol gas for a little more.
The web site www.pure-gas.org has a current list of these, or http://ethanolfreechatt.com/

My 2012 RT has been run entirely on Non-ethanol except when I am traveling and cant find it. I feel this is more important than which octane gas is used.

but, I havent tried Rocket Fuel yet!

I have been putting premium in mine During the first 3 months of owning a spyder and the MPG has been terrible  around 23! I just put 87 octane in yesterday I'll report back with the results.

Mid grade for me. I know I've been ryding the spyder recently when I fill the truck up with the good stuff and not 87 :D

I put in the highest grade octane available--Here it is 90 octane. Not advertised as containing any additives--so am guessing we have non-ethanol.

My mileage is pretty steady at 31-32 mpg. I don't push the :spyder2: hard--but maintain the revs at about 4500 for most driving below 55 mph. Traveling one up now--the mileage has improved to 32-34--but I am going to make sure that is not a fluke before I get to excited.

Mostly mid grade for my machine. Noticed again today that the sticker under the seat calls for 91 octane. I try to use non ethanol when I can find it, otherwise, I use the Star Tron additive to neutralize the ethanol. In my experience, snake oil or not to some, Star Tron has been the only thing aside from Seafoam that I have ever poured in a fuel tank that ever made any difference.

Per the manual:
Inside North America Recommended for optimum performance: 91 (R+M)/2.
Fuel Octane Minimum: 87 (R+M)/2
no.
Outside North America Recommended for optimum performance: 95 RON.

I always use 87, but unfortunately I'm cursed to live in an area where it's nearly impossible to find non-ethanol gas.

Big hurrah for West Virginia and Liberty Gas Stations- they tend to carry non-ethanol gas, out there I grab it like fine wine!

It's common to see ocatanes below 87 when you're in the mountain states...altitude plays in with this...
