• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Burning oil?

I am 600 miles post the 600 mile check, done by dealer.
i checked the oil today per the book, run engine to operating temp, shut off, run again for at least 60 seconds, check oil . I tightened the dip stick all the way down, took it out and checked the oil. The dipstick was barely wet. I put about 4 oz. in it 1 oz. at a timeand it came up to level.

Is it normal to use oil like that? Am I checking it correctly? Should I have gotten a low oil light or worse, a dreaded code or limp?

When getting up to operating temperature, did you ride it around or did you just let it idle up to temperature? It really needs to be ridden to get to "operating temperature", idling is not the best way to do it.

Only good way to check the oil is to ride it to get to temperature. Personally if I came off a long ride, I will let it sit for a few minutes then start it let it run for 30 seconds and then quickly check the oil level. If doing it after it has been sitting for awhile I will ride it till I get to 4 bars (on main display scale) then ride it back to the house. I then get my rag and oil ready, in case I need it, and start it up and run it for 30 seconds and then immediately check the oil.

Maybe things have changed since i had my 08 Sm5 gs , :dontknow:
The way i always check the oil ,Was ride around till the oil got good and hot then pull into my garage,
Without ''stopping'' the engine put it in neutral let it idle for 30 seconds.''Then'' shut the engine off,
And then check the oil.

Same difference, I just like to shut it off and restart and run for 30 seconds, also don't want to fume up the garage while I get my stuff together and remove the panel. Now when I have ridden long and hard I like to let it sit for a few so any bubbles will calm down before I do the check. I don't know if that would be a problem now that I have switched to Amsoil, but it is the way I have always done it.

sounds like you may not have checked it correctly also most of my new car's etc have used a little in the first few 1000's then seat in and use less and less until none at 8to12 thousand miles

Thanks all.
i will take your advise and ride it till hot, what a hardship ;) , it will probably Bo warm after a couple hundred miles eh ?

Though it may be the way you checked your oil, how do you know your dealer filled it properly? Did you check it right after your service?
