Brake Squeal Interim Solution

I called and ranted about my horrendous brake squeal. BRP assigned me a Customer Service Specialist or something or other to handle the issue. They promptly called me back and said they've acknowledged the problem and will work through my dealer to provide an interim solution. I'll find out tomorrow exactly what that means. Here's my guess...

When did the break squel start? I just got my spyder and had break squel for about the first 10 miles and as of now I have none.

Ignore the brake squeal for the first 600 miles- that's normal as your pads may need time to bed. Mine started at 2000 miles and have been a problem ever since (6k miles now).

Had the spyder three days now and brake squeal started within the first ten miles. Will talk with dealer on Wensday about the problem.

My dealer found that those that drove their Spyders hard during the breakin period and heavy braking have little to no sqweel.

Those that babied their spyder and did no heavy braking, have lots of brake sqweel.

I was a bit hard on the bike and had several emergency hard braking events and I have very little sqweel.

I've never babied anything in my life- except my baby I suppose. Also, I had my pad replaced and the problem returned so it's likely independent of break-in habits. Regardless, it's a manufacturer defect and not the fault of the consumer. I'm pleased that BRP acknowledged the problem.

I tend to agree. Every time ours made noise, I used it hard and it went away (or quieted considerably). Cleaning also has helped for a short while, but not consistently. Weather seems to play a big factor, especially humidity. I can pull into the garage with it perfectly quiet, then pull out in the morning with a screaming banshee, just because the weather changed. Wierdest thing is the almost constant noise in reverse, even pushing it out of the garage, but often quiet moving forward. My opinion is that the cause is pad material, and possibly pad design, rigidly mounted rotors, and poor caliper float or too much float causing the calipers to **** slightly.

The interim solution is...

...drum roll please...

Non-aerosol grease on the rear pad?!?! :dontknow:

I'll withhold judgment until I've driven her back home and put some miles on her but I'm less than impressed. It does, however, suggest that BRP believes the problem is pad material. I'll bet they offer a ceramic or organic pad before long.

It does affect the performance, MY PERFORMANCE. :yikes:

1300+ miles on mine. Went out for a short ride to the store yesterday, stopped at a traffic light, and the kids in the car next to me broke my :cus: saying they thought a garbage truck was next to them.

It's not squeaky loud, it's monster truck loud.

My only observation is, there appears to be an exorbitant amount of brake dust collected in the rims. If it is brake dust, could this be the source of the noise? Others notice a load of dust in the rims? :dontknow:

I guess the brake dust is normal with disc brakes on bikes. Nothing to worry about there. Take her in to your dealer though and ask for the interim solution. Shouldn't cost a thing.

When I took delivery of spYdie, the owner of the dealership introduced me to his service tech. The tech specifically mentioned parking brake issues and brake noise issues. He made recommendations for both.
My wife and I each have BMW's. The brakes make noise, especially if they have been subjected to moisture. Also, they make lots of brake dust, just like the spYder. The solution for us on all 3 vehicles is to apply the brakes aggressively. For me, having really good and effective brakes is a lot more important than some brake noise.

As for the parking brake -- judicious application, lube and attention to adjustment are the answer.

Update:

Squeak is non-existent so far. Dealer said they lubed a pin that was creating the harmonic with the pad. I know diddly about brakes so whatever. It sounds great and didn't cost me anything to fix. I'll be sure to update if that changes.

I didn't even know that the Spyder brakes used a diddly. Is that what is causing the squeel? :D :joke:
