In my humble opinion, No. There's quite a few threads on this subject so I'm sure you'll get a lively discussion going.

Most are going to at least 30,000 without valve check and adjust. If you have it done, it will add about $850 to your service bill.

Also many dealers know tha adjustments are not necessary--so you could end up being charged $850 plus for no work done at all. A nice profit booster for the dealer.

My dealer said no. But its like playing the deductible game with insurance. Should I go no deductible, 500, 1000, etc.

Since there are a lot of miles being racked up without any problems or valve checks--IMO--the gamble is a "safe" one.

On our 2008 SE5, we traded for the RT at 43,000 miles, the valve covers had never been off. The tech checked them before it was sold and told me that the valves showed no wear. IMHO, all the valve services "required" is a drastic overkill. And what warranty can be voided, other than the engine blowing up, has anything to do with the valves not checked? The 2010 RT has almost 20,000 miles and has yet to be worked on by the shop for anything other than warranty work. When will I ever check the valves? Probably 50, maybe 60,000. If it runs right, I may never. I just change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles, use Royal Purple 10W40 Automotive Synthetic, as I have been since the SE5 had 3,000 miles and I ride and don't worry..

In 2010 BRP changed the requirement from first 6,000 miles to first 12,000 miles and 12,000 miles therafter. :doorag:

Actually, they changed it to the first check at 6,000 miles, then every 12,000 thereafter.

I've got my 6,000 mile service coming up, I have no idea if my local dealer will insist on the valve check-- I fear they will, they strike me as a bit of money-loving stickler outfit, but I'll push back. A valve check at 6K seems really, really overkill, especially at that price.

I agree!! I'm not sure how money grubbing my service dealer is. They have treated me all right doing mods and such. But with the majority opinion here being that it's overkill, I will push not to do it. 18,000 miles seems certainly early enough to catch problems. Many here going well past that!

Long story short. Last year around March I had an oil leak and around 12,000 on the spyder. It turns out it was the bottom gasket on the rear cylinder. When they replaced the gasket, since they had to remove the engine, they checked the valves and didn't charge me.

By the way, when they checked the valves I didn't know it. It was when I went back to have something else done and asked about checking the valves that I found out.

He also made a comment, based on the number of spyders they had worked on and checked the valves over different mileages, you could probably go 50,000 without having to physically check the valves.

OK I have my 2011 RT manual in front of me and it does not require the valve until 12K

Read the fine print. My 2011 manual still has a footnote saying the first check should be done at 6K.

Absolutley right, Scotty. The right-hand column says "Inspect first at 10,000 km (6,000 mi)". Unfortunately the mandate continues with the 2012 RT manual -- BRP has not backed off this requirement.
