Beka's Spyder

I've had my Spyder for about a month and I've done a few mods so far. First up, a Garmin Zumo 550 because I have a really terrible sense of direction.

I used just the supplied parts that came with the Zumo 550. I had to remove the warning card from the dash and drill 2 holes for the mount.

It's bolted through 2 pieces of plastic on the Spyder and feels very secure. Tested it on a 440 mile trip and it held up just fine.

Some BRP lawyer is having a heart attack right now, just because you did that. :D Way to go!

I added a Scorpio i900 alarm just recently since I work in Cambridge, MA and I'm a bit paranoid about leaving the Spyder alone while I work.

Here's the underside of the tail. The wire with velcro is the antenna. The main unit is held in place with velcro as well.

I'm not too happy with the location of the proximity sensor. I need to find a better spot, but it works for now. There's almost exactly the right size opening on the underside of the seat to accommodate the sensor.

The sensor should also fit on top of the rectangular frame rail. In front of the seat, the plastic cover starts flat on the frame where the plastic rivets are <under the seat> and then abruptly rises... put it just in front of the rise. Velcro works just fine.
.
I like it here as it provides better warning for folks fooling around with the handlebars, GPS and radar detector.

And my latest mod should really be standard equipment in my opinion. Too bad about little things like rules and such. Looks amazing and sounds great too.

I have a Throttle Rocker as well which is probably the best mod for the $. Really saves my hand on the longer trips. Next up will be wrapping the exhaust & installing a Givi V46 topcase and backrest with the Thibault rack.

Wish list: New grips/pegs, Magic Man's HID kit, Ken's O2 mod & air filter, larger windshield, Kewlmetal mirror extenders, seat pad, and for my husband to get his license so he doesn't have to ride on the back all the time. Not necessarily in that order.

Thanks ataDude. I wanted to put it there, but I couldn't get the cable to reach. My guess is that you mounted the main unit in a different spot? I'll be taking most of the plastic off again when I wrap the exhaust anyway, so I may just redo things then.

 Sounds like you are getting a good start on your Spyder mods. It's hard to pick out which items in your wish list should come first. The license for your husband is probably towards the top of that list but the HIDs from NoMagicNeon should be right up there. They make an amazing difference.

Nope on moving the "main unit". Just removed the grip (with the "lip" that was in the way), installed the modified throttle lock, drilled and tapped the hole through both the throttle lock and the stock switch housing, then reinstalled the grip to fit.

But... explain "couldn't get the cable to reach". ??

For some reason the pictures are not making it. :dontknow:

Very odd. The photos worked yesterday. I just edited the posts and fixed it.

ataDude: I'm confused. I thought we were talking about the Scorpio alarm.

Nah... I'm the confused one. I switched topics on you. :yikes:

Sorry about that. :opps:

Got it on the cable... the one to the sensor is too short.

I had a busy weekend. I didn't relocate the alarm yet since I'm not 100% sure where I'm moving things, but I got a lot of other mods done. First off, thanks to MM for getting the HID kit shipped insanely fast. And bjt, you were completely right. These lights are great. I can see them reflecting off of street signs even in the daylight. With my husband on the back, I could see them reflecting pretty sharply off of the overhead road signs, so I think I may need to stiffen the rear shock a bit more. I haven't gone on a nighttime ride yet, but I'm sure it'll be a vast difference. Nice visibility in daylight too:

I also added the Thibault/Industries7 side bag setup. The topcase and mount are on the way. FedEx decided to ram something through the box, so I was down a couple of screws, but I had enough to get things set up for some pics.

Lastly, I wrapped a good chunk of the exhaust pipe. It's not a tough mod, but it is probably the most painful one. I used the copper wrap and little flecks of copper ended up EVERYWHERE. On the plus side, after a 40 mile ride the bodywork on the left side no longer feels like it's trying to fry my leg. I think it's going for a slow roast now.

Be careful what you wish for! I let my wide ride my Spyder the first week we got it (She had never been on a motorcycle) and the next weekend I was at the dealer forking out the $$ for hers. Now everything I buy for mine has to have a quantity of two! Its like planning for a boy and getting twins.

I hear ya brother! Don't worry about having to buy two of everything for the Spyder. After a while, she will know what she wants for hers all on her own. :D

I'd love for my husband to decide to get his own. I can take corners a lot faster without having him on the back.

Love ur bike, I'm trying to talk my hubby into buying me one. I told him he wouldnt be aloud to drive it though.. hehe.
