I took a REDA 1 gallon gas can on my recent trip. Had about .8 gallons in it-- plenty of room for expansion. Stored it in my passenger seat bag along with tools, rain gear, etc.....

Needless to say --- it smelled bad after a few days on the road. Cap was tight, etc.

Eventually I saw a bit of gas that had leaked out of the top and was going down the side.

Filled the Spyder up with it (which is a messy process) and left it at a gas station in Maine.

Glad I didn't have this in with my clothes------ would not trust one of these to contain gas without smell or leaks.

Also I use the can contents and refill at least every three weeks to keep fresh and have found putting the contents in the tank easy and efficient.. Can help but wonder if something is wrong with your specific can.

We used the Rotopax and they held up well. When we would fill them up in a cold climate and go to a warm one, they would swell up but never bust or leak.

Glad you didn't have the Reda in with your clothes.

We'll never know since I left it at the gas station. Not sure how the filling could not be somewhat messy considering the entire neck is submerged in gas -- so it's all wet with gas when you pull it out of the tank.

Won't be getting another one.

My wife asked me if carrying a gallon of gas in a can might be dangerous in our saddlebags. I politely told her you straddle 6 or more gallons most of the time so not very dangerous. I find there are plenty of gas stations on all trips. I can not see a need to carry. We stop every 80 to one hundred miles anyway. May as well stop at a fuel station.

Agreed. I mainly brought it along for one of my HD buddys that can only go around 110 miles per tank..... I usually look for a station around 120-- knowing that I can hit 150+ if I need to.

Had the REDA for a few months now. I agree that it hasn't been perfect, but found that I hadn't made sure the O-Ring was properly seated. Since then, it's been airtight. In fact, when I pulled it out a few days ago to dump the contents into the tank, it was sucked in. I guess the fuel may have been warm when I'd filled it.

I agree with Firefly that having the filler neck immersed ensures either your hands or gloves will come in contact with the fuel, but I've used it in Good Samaritan mode a couple of time on the road, so I guess I'll live with it.

We carried two of them 4,600+ miles. The only time we smelled gas was when we finally got to an altitude of about 7,000' and then we had a smell of gas, but it went away. No leakage. In Montana we were happy for the peace of mind, especially the time we went 156 miles between gas stations!

I've had a similar experience, but only went 3000 miles for the week.
Also, I filled it up in CT when it was about 40 F and drove around in Lynchberg TN when it was around 98 F, all with no leak or smell.
I agree, however, that carrying the can was a needless precaution. I read a bunch of posts about people running out of gas and became overly concerned.
Since then I've had the second, yes I said second replacement of the gas gauge. The second replacement seems to indicate the gas level much better. My red light comes on at around 140 miles.

I'm done with the idea of bringing extra gas. Never had a need for it myself, would have come in handy for another rider once.

120 miles and I'm usually ready to stretch my legs out anyway....

I'm thinking a decent siphon kit would be easier to carry should the need arise.....

I've carried one (or two) of them on my last few trips and have never had any fuel smell at all.

I saw a post somewhere that said it's better to fill them up higher so there is less expansion room. :dontknow:

I don't understand how REDA gas can works . If the can is a tight seal then how does it vent so that no smell is in the compartment that it is carried in and if the can does not vent then why does it not burst or swell up:dontknow:

Please excuse my ignorance as I am new to the world of riding.

I tried a Reda for A (not 2) ride... it leaked in my top case and now it is in the garage never to be used again!! the smell is still in the top case and it destroy my box/connectors for iPod which was lying there.......

I carried two REDA cans in my left saddlebag for the entire Maggie Valley/ Blue Ridge Parkway 2,300 mile, eleven day trip. No odors whatsoever. I carry a few pairs of nitrile gloves in case I have to use the cans to fill (or do other dirty stuff). There is no way to avoid contact when those fill tubes are immersed. I learned this long ago with some lawnmower cans.

They have redesigned the top...no more of that..I had that issue and spoke with Ron...he had me send mine back and he replaced it with one that had a cap that was tight before all the 'clicks' were done...
