Battery tender help

Hello all
I read many posts about the Battery Tenders. I decided to purchase the plus model with 12v/cig adapter based upon research here. I needed it because it seems that during my LED installs , testing, and demos I may have run my battery down a bit. I got a limp home for the first time. I run for a bit at the highest rpm that the mode allows, around 3-4M. The code goes out and I ryde all day without issue. So I assumed a low charge situation.

Here is my question. I plug the adapter into the rrunk 12v socket and I get alternating green/red on the tender plus. Looking at the instructions it suggests a "wired incorrectly" issue. I don't Believe that is true, but who knows.

I may have to wire directly to the battery with the pig tails, but I really wanted the convenience of the 12v plug.

Anyone have an idea/suggestion?

Gee Steve... When I plug mine in, I get a yellow light for a while, but it goes back to green in a short time...
Green/red; Could that be an indication that your battery is toast?? :yikes:

I use this same technique and it is red when I plug it in, and green when I am back in the morning. You might want to get that battery checked.

Man I hope not. Planning a trip to FL next week.

I guess I'll have to do some research on batteries now !?!

:dontknow: Slight possibility but;;
While charging my trolling battery with a Sears trickle/maintainer charger i had the same alternating red/green, I know the battery was good ,so brought the charger back , and the new one works fine.

Hmm. Yep remote, but a possibility on the charger. Never considered that. I'll look up the specs and put the multi meter on it tonight to see the output. Good idea. Thanks!

I also use plug in trunk with Battery Tender and has always worked flawlessly for me... Have you used plug in trunk and know it is hot if not check to make sure you are getting power at receptacle and fuse is good in that circuit so battery tender can charge batt...

Yep. The plug is good. I charge my Bluetooth dongles with it. So I am sure it is ok. It looks like either a bad tender-plus or a battery beyond saving.

I have some testing to do tonight!

About narrowed down Time to check output of tender or try it on your

You might want to check your cigarette adapter. It could be wired backwards, causing reverse polarity. The tip should be positive. I suppose it is possible that the Spyder outlet was incorrectly wired, too.

On the Battery Tender Plus......

Reverse Polarity Protection to ensure user safety. Red & Green Lights Alternately Flash in this condition.
Does sound like you have a reverse polarity condition.....

Question. If the polarity was reversed on the cig-12v adapter, would it still correctly charge my 12 v devices? I'm ok with wrenches but not so much electrical!

No, it will not charge with the polarity reversed.

Ok. I think I can rule that out then. The rrunk adapter does charge my dongles and iPhone just fine.

I'll post back tomorrow with the voltage readings from the multi meter. I'll also hock it to my Tahoe battery to see If the tender-plus is ok.

Wait a sec. You asked about the 12V adapter, not the outlet. If the outlet charges the devices OK, then the Spyder should be correctly wired. You still need to test the adapter itself for proper polarity.

Am I missing something? how can you charge a battery from the battery you are charging? If you plug in a battery tender with an adapter(inverter?)and conect it to your battery you are using batt.power to charge your batt.,how can that work?

Yes. Outlet. See! Told you I was bad with electric. I can't even get the right terminology! So I can rule out the Spyder outlet and focus my attention on the tender plus adapter plug and the tender itself.

Thanks!

The battery tender plugs into a 110 wall outlet and connects to the spyder battery and provides a trickle charge. At least it is supposed to work that way!!
