gas mileage

I just got my 2011 Spider RTS. I am having the 600 Mile oil change today in Omaha. I am only getting 24 miles per gallon. I thought it should get better than that. Any suggestions?

:welcome: and :congrats: on the new ryde.

There are several threads about gas mileage that you might want to check out. One as recent as yesterday.

There are a lot of factors involved with gas mileage.

Most are getting 29-31 mpg. As the machine breaks in--mileage will improve.

I check my mpg most every tank and usually get around 30. I have done as good as 34--once.

The Spyder is not known for its economy on mileage or servicing. Most of us ryde the Spyder for other reasons.

:welcome: & :congrats: Enjoy your new ryde! I ride my spyder for enjoyment and am not too concerned about gas mileage :ohyea:

:welcome: and like AK said there are several threads about gas mileage. That being said yours is in the pretty normal range. It may improve some as you get more miles on it but don't expect anything drastic.

After my 600 mi. service I have been averaging 30mpg or better...
So hang in there should get better but don't expect much more than about 30mpg avg....

Better mileage with the windshield in the lowered position; that's how we get about 34+. I also use cruise a lot. Hope this helps

Mileage

My wife is at 37,000mi. now consistent 34+ with windshield cut 4" and Two Bros. exhaust, she got 34-39 on our recent trip to Alaska all pulling the trailer LOADED.

I have had my bike for 3weeks now, about 800 miles todate. Mixed driving I get 24, my best is 27. I expect to get between 25 and 30 after it gets broken in from what i have heard so far.

My mileage normally ranges from 28 - 30 mpg. The RT creates a whole lot of wind resistance so anything you can do to reduce wind resistance, such as lowering the windscreen, will help mileage. In my experience, the single most effective method to improve mpg is reducing speed. Riding twisties in the mountains in New Mexico I got more than 40 mpg. I got 34 mpg on a recent ride to view wildfire damage here in west Texas. I was riding under 65 mph the whole way and there was little or no wind (a rarity in this part of the world).

I don't worry much about gas mileage. It is what it is and I've gotten used to it. What does bother me some is the lack of range. I wish the RT had a bigger gas tank so I wouldn't have to stop twice as often as my BMW riding buddies. Hope your mileage increases as your RT-S breaks in.

Gas Mileage

A big factor in your mileage is how quick you shift up/down.

If you drive it to get max mileage you would shift in the 3000-4500 range, which is when the computer allows it to up shift.

I got 32 and 34 mpg on my first two tanks while is was "babying" the machine.

I have read that this engine "likes" to be driven hard, shifting at a higher range in the 4500-5500 range. If that is how you are driving, you will get lower mpg.

I also have been letting the computer downshift when I brake instead of manually doing so. That also will improve mpg.

I admit running "hard" is more fun. It just depends on what mood I am in at the time I am riding and knowing the mpg will go down when I do so.

My novice 2¢.

Gas Mileage

I have the 2011 RTS/SE5 with just over 1,000 miles. I fill the tank all the way to make sure my reading are accurate. I am getting just over 32 mpg. on 92 octane. I will also mention that I upshift just over 3,000 rpm's with the throttle backed off each time. It is very smooth this way. When I am riding on the highway (65 MPH ) the tach is reading about 4,500 rpms.

:welcome::congrats:on the:spyder: Milage will improve some after breakin Enjoy your ride
:agree: Once the engine loosens up you'll see an improvement. Others have mentioned dropping the windshield a couple of inches seems to help.
DON'T FORGET: Your very own right wrist will have the greates affect on how you fell when pulling away from the pumps.
I short-shift and ride like an old woman and stay consistenly above 35mpg now...

MPGs

I cut my windshield down an inch lower then the 2011 and also have the lower 2011 deflectors. My MPG is now mid 30's US mpg and mid 40's Can mpg. I have over 10,000 miles on my RT.

I have a bit over 3,800 miles on the 2011 RTS Limited. Our recent trip to San Antonio pulling trailer got us between 21 and 22mpg going down fighting a strong wind while pulling the RT-622 trailer averaging 75MPH. The return trip we got 24MPG running same speed. I bought 91 & 93 octane gas at stops, but was not able to find any real gasoline in Texas. We run 91 octane real gasoline and am back up to a bit over 30MPG without trailer here at home and on a recent round trip to Clarksville. Best I have gotten has been 32MPG one time and that was well before 600 miles on the machine.

I just got 31 in mixed freeway/hiway and town driving. I was having cold start problems so I did some research and found that 76 stations in our area do not contain alcohol. Not sure if it helped the cold start yet but I believe it really helped to get the better MPG. My best up to now has been 27 with the average around 25.

I absolutely believe running real gasoline without that poisonous ethanol in it makes a difference in MPG. I know it makes a difference in my four wheeled vehicles.

I am guilty of twisting my right wrist a wee bit from time to time, too. :ohyea::D

REAL Gas huge difference

Was able to put in my first tank (5.7 gal) of REAL gas...unfortunately I do not live in an area where it is available..ethanol crap in everything close to me. Anyhow my mileage with the real deal was 36.1..
Amazing difference...I normally hang right around 32-33 if I keep windshield down and OFF throttle..
Guess that means I need to go on 200 mile ryde  every time I want to gas up..:roflblack::roflblack:

MY 2010 RTSE5 has 15k on her..so maybe she is "broke in"!!!!
