RT with "DPS" Problem

Having similar problems with limp mode the last three weeks. Mine occurred when taking sharp turns to the right. VSS/Nanny kicked in and went into limp mode only to disappear when I turn it off and restart. Dealer is working their butts off to fix. Gave it to me yesterday to ride this weekend. Made a sharp left hand turn this time and left wheel came off the ground about a foot. (wife on spyder with me and needless to say not pleased). VSS/Nanny did not kick in. Limp mode didn't show.

I'm still pleased with my spyder though. I just love riding this thing.

Have them check your steering sensors. Response should be the same in both directions. The sensors may have to be zeroed, or one or more may need replacement. Sounds like the yaw sensor may be whacko.

Last Saturday I was 75 miles from home, running around 60 -65. The "check DPS" comes on the screen and a small spyder logo flashes on the odometer screen...on for 2-3 seconds and off for 10 and then back on. No limp mode.

I rode home, crusing at 60. I did not detect any loss of power steering or engine performance. I did not accelerate hard and was on the Interstate most of the time.

Called dealer and have an appointment for Wednesday. They said "ride it". I stopped for gas 1 mile from home and when I started up, all was clear and BR1 ran well. I plan a local ride this afternoon to see if it happens again.

I have about 1,450 miles on my RT.

Guess I need to apologize to all. Said I'd keep everyone updated but, I still haven't had mine to the dealer to check it out. Problem has not happened again. When it did, my steering was fine at highway speed but absolutly NO power steering at low speed. I'm scheduled for an appointment with the dealer on Thursday and we'll see what if anything BUDS shows. My DPS was also replaced last year as part of the recall.

I'm sure that was just a typo error..Making a left hand turn would tend to raise right wheel ....:yikes:...

Freebob...:doorag:

Question, not a complaint or whine. Saturday, when my "check DPS" came on, I was in a posted "30 mph" right hand curve and running about 55-60. The right wheel did not come off the ground and no "nanny" that I am aware...I have no idea if this aggressive riding would/could cause the check screen?

I did stop and remove and replace the key, but the check came on when I started to go and a small "Spyder logo" started flashing in the odometer window off and on. I rode home the 75 miles, stopped for gas and when I started up, no more check DPS for a mile to my home. Weird.

Very "similar" in description to my issue. Just got a call from my service manager stating that the wiring harness is scheduled to be in Thursday. He said that they will certainly try and have it installed that day. I might add that either in this thread or another one I earlier stated a complete rewiring was necessary. Since I'm not a gear head, I may have over stated the "fix". I don't know if installing a new wiring harness requires a complete rewiring or not. I apologize for any misrepresentation. I think it very important to be precise in one's use of terminology so that everyone is on the same page. That's why I'm mentioning now.

I'll have an update as to status.

Well... A lot of these symptoms are a lot like what I had... And the main issues was the Passenger Sensor under the seat and the Battery.

I am very pleased to report that all of our RT-S issues are long gone and we just turned another 602 miles since being in the shop for this repair.:2thumbs:

Good luck with all of you. From the sounds of it I see one DPS Position Sensor, one Passenger Sensor, and a battery connection issue and potentially a few "BUDS" defibrillator hits :roflblack:. Only Time will tell :spyder2:

Now that last one was a good one. Thanks for putting a smile on my face.

DPS position sensor? Passenger Sensor? I am NO Wrench. I guess the DPS sensor helps with the control of the Spyder...?? But passenger sensor?? Please explain what these do and what they does to affect or cause "yellow screens". I have a passenger sensor in my truck which activates the air bag...but on a Spyder....duh??

Please help this old timer on these "new to me" items.

I took BR1 out for a 50 mile ride this morning, ran 50-85 through the gears, 8,500 rpm for a short time in 3rd and crused at 70-75. It ran great with no "check" screens.

It tells the nanny that you have a passenger and changes the way the ABS Engages. If you ride solo you'll never know its there.

Thanks. In another two years on this site, I will know a great deal about the RT. I learn something every day.

I think someone smarter than I needs to come in and talk about the DPS and VSS/Nanny and sensors. I think there may be some confusion. I would comment, but I fear it would only lead to more confusion.

boborgera is correct...

Additionally I did go into some detail in one of my posts above on the details...

These Spyders are small multiple computer sensors with three wheels. Oh and some other fandanlged stuff.

In a nut shell. The flashing on and off Spyder with squiggly lines around it has many responsibilities. One being the Passenger Sensor. It was coming on, we would take our Spyder in and our dealer never found any "BUD's" info to tell us why. Made us feel like dorks. So we go back, pickup our Spyder and ryde. Then it happens again and again...

It never hurt the performance of the Spyder, but is was annoying. Combine this, with the drop in performance after the second tank of fuel on a day long ryde, with the on again off again power steering. I got pissed off during a day out for a stroll, and drove our Spyder to the dealer without turning off the Spyder. This way they could finally see (I felt like they might think we had been F.O.S.) the darn light coming on and off, feel the lack of power-steering and power.

Back to the flashing Spyder. It tells us something is not right, but is not necessarily going to trigger a BUD's code. It has many things that can make the light come on.

What makes me think these sensors are the potential issue, and not a major mechanical issue is quite simple. Mechanical usually stays broken. Electrical/computer/sensors/relays/etc usually reset after turning off the key. And many times do not come back on for hundreds of miles until you can narrow down what you are doing at the time to make the issue happen again. That is how our situation was solved. Keeping track. Once they discovered it was after a long ryde when these issues came up, it helped them narrow down the potential issues and they found them very quickly. :2thumbs:

I am in no way suggesting any of my experience with these symptoms are the same as yours directly, but I suspect parts of it is for others...

I am sorry, but the more I learn here, the more questions I have. When my "Check DPS" screen and small spyder logo came on, I was hard in a 35 mph curve at 60, maybe 65....I was pushing it pretty hard and having a ball! The front wheel did not come off the road, I don't think. Could my aggressive riding have caused the "check DPS" screen?

As I said earlier in another post, it did not go off when I stopped and shut down, it did not go away when I started...and stayed on over an hour as I rode home the 75 miles. I stopped for gas one mile from home and when I started out, it did not come on! Weird!

When I rode today for 50 miles, doing everything I could to get the "check DPS" to come on, it didn't! BR1 ran like a hose. Weird!

Took BR1 in for her 10:00 appointment. They hooked up the BUDS and it showed a bad steering sensor...it was changed it out, checked the oil, aired up the tires and rode it for a check ride. I was on my way at 10:45.

Beautiful! It seems we are narrowing this down as a community. I am glad it was this simple issue and one of the items I considered to be a possible culprit... :ohyea::yes:

Hope all goes well for ya George.

It ran great on the way home, 50 miles, but I actually believe the steering required a little less input...may be in my mind...anyway, it ran great...(except for the heat...HOT today!)

The BUDS showed the problem...it was all on the screen. No issues, the tech said "there's the problem". He changed it out and all is well. He ran the complete BUDS check to be sure he got everything. I had called him for an appointment last Saturday and told him my problem. He acted like he already knew what the BUDS would say when he hooked it up. I sure have not been the first sensor to go out.
