I might be on engine 3

A little smoke once in a while sounds a lot like water in the gas. Was the smoke white? Even SeaFoam or dry gas may not purge all water from the system. You may have to drain the fuel tank, change the fuel filter, flush the system, and clean the injectors...if that is the case.

the smoke is blue, smells of unburned oil, I ran the same gas the whole day and had filled it up the day before.
I had a theory that if my spark plug wire was shorting and it was not firing as clean would this happen? The wrench I talked to was going to tear into it and see what is going on.

Seth, hate to change the subject from your smoking pipes, but have you taken up a new hobby? :doorag:

no, just borrowed my hero cam to some cops I work with and they had the stuff for the pic, one of the 7 "perfect days"(these are the days that people who make bullsheet excuses about weather, their toenails or hair was not perfect the day they should be riding) to ride on that day.

Hi Seth, Caswells in Mora has a great mechanic and they are really good to work with. The owner's name is Les, talk to him. Their phone # is 320-679-1383 good luck.

I have been burned on downing warranty work at other dealerships, brothers in brainerd are true tools about stuff like this, "you didn't buy it here.... well we can't really do anything for you on that then"

If this place goes bad I will give them a call, thanks butch.

That's too bad. White smoke would indicate water, and black smoke unburned fuel, but blue means oil. The intermittent nature of it is odd. I suppose a misfire could cause such a thing on a well-worn engine, but it is not common. A tight engine would not normally do this. If the problem is rings, head or cylinder damage, or valve guides, it is usually more constant. If it is one of those things, a compression test and maybe a leak-down test may be in order. The only other thing I could think of would be a bad scavenging pump, which allows oil to build up in the crankcase, and be forced past the rings at times. That will usually show up as eventual lubrication problems, as the oil tank runs low. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

the wrench was going to to do both of these tests, I will keep ya updated.

If it were scavenging problems (sumping), he'd probably feel a substantial loss of power, as the dry sump case filled itself with oil and the crank and rods had to splash their way through it. Intermittent oil smoke sounds more like valve seals, especially if it's more apparent on decel, when vacuum is high........ BTW, where is crankcase breather set up to vent, and what does it look like? Excessive oil in the case should have the breather well fouled, also...

the power was a little light right at the time i saw the smoke but it sounds perfect when it was running in the dealership. did not seem terrible after the smoke but I did not push it.

the crank case breather is the off race airflow system from evoizone? I did not check that, the oil was on the line after the spyder was warmed so there was not too much oil in it.

We also tried to rev it and then let off to see if a puff of smoke would come out of the exhaust.

got a call from honda house today, they have to call brp on tuesday, there was a oil line o ring that was causing the oil leak but the real news was that the compression in one cylinder was 170 and the other was 60, the guy I talked to did not know which one but my money is on the back one. They did a leak down test too. They said the results did not make sense to them and they had to call brp about them.

When I find out more I will post up, glad they got back too me and especially on a saturday.

Glad they found the oil leak, but that compression loss is alarming. I sure hope it's something relatively simple, like a head gasket.......
That would be nice, but it is an ominous loss. Not sure why a leakdown test would be inconclusive...unless there was both valve and cylinder damage.

I am leaning this way too, if BRP just had a full engine they wanted tested sitting around for doc or I to "test" for them so I would be back on the road sonner, also going to swap out the front sprocket with the 2011 one seeing its in the shop.

Wow. Either way it does not sound too good. Let's hope for the lesser of the evils like a head gasket or something in the valve train. Could get messy if they have to crack the case. Definitely hopin the bottom end is still OK...

well called them today which is the last warranty day for my original warranty and they are tearing it apart, 60 in the front cylinder for compression and the leak down test had a 80% loss, so I am sure it will be a full rebuild but I will not know more until they call, I will call again next tuesday.

My neighbors kids are sure getting good at dodging rocks that I throw at them from my porch.

Well shoot! That sucks man. :( But now that the case is cracked they may as well go whole Hog so that you can feel good about it again. That is as long as it is under warranty. I hope it all works out so you can get back on the road soon.

I wonder how long it will take them if they have to go total rebuild. I reckon we are ging to find out. Those neighbor kids better get quicker!

just got off the phone with honda house, the front piston ring rolled on top of the piston but did not go thru the motor, they ordered all the parts and should have it together in a few weeks, I also am checking if they can put the 2011 front sprocket on it as well seeing its in the shop.

I am hoping the wrench can send me a picture.

Wow, it's amazing that the cylinder is still good. Definitely not as bad as it could have been I guess. I'm glad things are getting closer to being resolved. Thanks for the update Seth!

well I called today and I guess when the wrench was putting the engine back together he did not like the cylinder wall and called brp and ordered one on monday, it was not there today and should be there tomorrow so it should be done on tuesday of next week or hopefully earlier.

SO good news that is being done right but bad that is not done.

it was 35 degrees up here today, man my arm is getting strong from throwing rocks at the neighbors kids, they are getting quick too.

I am worried about your warranty expiring... Do you plan to trade this one in or buy an extended warranty?

Rocks!

SethO;
It sounds like you have a real bad case of PSS.:D I hope you get your ride back next week. That would probably make the neighborhood kids happy too.:2thumbs:

Glad to hear they are making progress, but sorry to hear they still don't have it done yet.

Have they said anything about your request to put the 2011 sprocket on yet? I was told that something was different about the 2011 clutch as well in order to work in conjunction with the 2011 front sprocket. Please let us know what you find out on that front.

Best of luck getting your Spyder back before you throw your shoulder out of joint with those rocks.
