• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. B,U.D.S. ?

Newbie question. What does B.U.D.S. stand for?

x.x. diagnostic. system?

I know its the diagnostic computer tool you plug into to read the fault codes.

Laptop port?

Forgive my "dumb question". Couldn't BRP supply a laptop port and a CD
wherein you could plug into your Spyder and determine what's going on,sort of like the BUDS? They could supply you with a glossary of codes. This might help you be able to maintain it better instead of having to trailer it to a dealer all the time. I'm optimistic that we are going to see better reliability reports from the 2011 models. As was peviously stated, the Goldwing went through years of development and refinement based on input from it's riders. The Spyder is new and complex. Good engineering is refined simplicity. Comments? I like a good discussion. :chat:

In the BRP shop manual there are the glossary of codes that you seek and a procedure for how to display the codes on the Spyder screen display without hooking up any computer. You can not however do diagnosis or clear codes without the BRP exclusive BUDS software, which at this time is only sold to authorized dealers. To the best of my knowledge.

No such thing as a dumb question here OldDog. :lecturef_smilie:

The Can Am Spyder service manual (readily available on places like eBay) do contain diagnostic codes. I had to recently consult with some of those codes but I enjoy working on my own Spyder too. I imagine the BUDS software is akin to those diagnostic computers you see in many car repair shops. Sure it would be nice to have one for personal use but the expense alone doesn't make it worth while for an individual.

Actually the limp mode feature on Can Am ATV's and Spyders is a pretty handy feature since it does save you from being stranded every time something goes wrong. Do other cycles have this? Others may know the answer. Lamonster/Scotty?

Alrighty then...:ohyea: Well somebody on another thread said this is the place to come for answers and I guess this really proves that. This place contains a wealth of knowledgable people. :2thumbs: Next question....:dontknow:

:agree: Ok I will admit it too I had no idea what B.U.D.S stood for until I read Neez reply. But I did know that it was not a brand of beer in this case:roflblack::D I did know that it was software for a diagnostic computer for the :spyder2:

Old Dog, I am 78 and just a pup....ha ha Hey, what does this "limp mode" actually do? I read where "it went into limp mode" but have no idea what it does to the trike.

Limp mode limits the rpm, slowing you down...sometimes suddenly and unpredictably. It is found in various forms and various strengths on many modern vehicles. BRP's version seems a bit overzealous, however. On an RS, burned out brake lights will force limp mode (or a switch to plain LEDS). A warning would suffice. Just as easy to program, IMO.

Greetings George

Old Dog, I am 78 and just a pup....

Greetings, George. I'm just a newly retired squirt at 63. I was looking at Lehman Goldwing trikes before getting bitten by the Spyder bug. I'm still a lurker for the moment. i went from big bucks to some bucks when i retired and my 401k took a slam with the recession. I'm not poor by any means,
but I'll have to postpone my purchase for a little while. For me it was retire or lose my health insurance. :(

I suggest anyone considering trikes to try both stlyes. I also found out there are wide diferences between trikes on the same base bike. Motor Trike, Califorina Sidecar, Lehman and others. I was seriously considering a Honda VTX 1300 to trike. I was able to obtain a Demo ride of about 20 miles on a Spyder. I would have had a lot money in VTX/motor Trike, then in the Spyder, Plus, I believe the Spyder is more comfortable, handles better and is lot safer. I had a RS/GS but the seating position did not fit me (old and chubby do not help ). I traded for a RT and love it.

I think BUDS talks to an IXXAT CANII interface.
Didn't they scrap CAN1 or something?

Been thinking of purchasing a CANII interface to play around with.

Yeah I talked to a few guys on the net about the CAN setup and talking to the BUDS software. I have a few things I want to change in the software to have it talk to a different connector. That is a spring/summer coding project when I have time.

Note:
The only reason behind this is just to run my own checks on devices without having to spend hours or days going through dealers who are usually pretty busy. As for firmware upgrades and service bulletins and stuff I don't mind going through the dealer. I understand why BRP keeps everything locked down but it would be nice if more information was available for some things.

How about a GUI interface that corelates the fault code to a specific point on a skeleton view of the spyder chassis/engine/suspension. That way you can pin point where the problem is. I'm not at all advocating changing BRP's proprietary code. I'm just thinking this would allow the owner a clearer picture of what may be wrong with his/her Spyder. If there are user administerable codes, then the owner could reset certain alarms etc. ala the three key turn function. Thoughts , comments ? Is this redundant?

BUDS has a 3D view of the engine and shows where different connectors are. Next time im in there I can snap a screen shot and then associate that with the different solenoids and stuff. I just have to get off my lazy ass and do it. This 9% beer im drinking right now is slowing me down from booting my laptop up :/
