• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Lately I've noticed that my Spyder (2008 SE) doesn't blip the throttle on downchange as it used to.:(

I had the dealer check it at the 20000km service, and he changed the solenoid. It seemed ok for a while, but is now not doing its job most of the time.:shocked:

I have tried the power up test and it worked fine 20 times in a row. At the dealers today for the 25000km service, it failed occasionally under BUDS. The suggested repair is to replace the blipper solenoid (again). :dontknow:

Neither of us are happy about this, he is going digging for more info with his sources, and I am doing likewise with mine.

The crux seems to be that BUDS isn't fast enough to monitor the actual blipper pulse. It can only say that it worked or didn't on a best 3 out of 5 basis. So, I'd like to know if anyone has (out of geeky interest) measured the blipper pulse width.

It would help me to know if it is a positive going pulse or a negative going pulse, so I can put together some monitoring electronics.

Any geeks want to stick their hand up?

I'll take that as a no. Fair enough, it isn't the kind of thing that normal people would do.;)

From careful reading of the shop manual, I think that the signal is a negative going pulse, pulling the bottom of the blipper solenoid to ground.

I got a call today to say that they will try replacing the blipper again. Einstein said that a definition of insanity was to do the same thing over and over and to expect different results each time...

The mechanic said that they had measured the voltage at the blipper during a downshift and it had fallen from about 7V to about 2V. I thought that was a bit weak, but he said that he had done the same measurement on another spyder and got similar results.

It will take two weeks for the new part to arrive, so I'll have a poke around under the Tupperware while I'm waiting.

My plan (if I can so decorate the loose collection of half-baked ideas in my head), is to first make some measurements on the blipper so I know what I'm dealing with. Then I'll make a more robust 7V supply and see if it helps. Next I'll make up my own blipper control, picking up signals from the TCM and shift switches and seeing if that works any better.

If anyone has tried any of this, I'd appreciate any insights you have.

mine just failed, to restore the day after. a week then happened again. 30k miles now. i had occasional high idle since new and lubeing the throttle and blipper turn tables cured it. tried lube and no blipper problem yet. i also noted that the shaft mounting turn tables is very wobbly on it's mount on bracket. i suspect that the turn table is binding and, since the blipper travel is limited, no rpm blip. will remove throttle body to see what can be done. i really don't think you have a problem with the blipper solenoid expecially since it was replaced already. hope this helps.
 
I had a high idle on my 2008 sm5 the other day. It was like the throttle was sticking, but it was not. I disconnected the battery terminal and took off the tupperware and sprayed lubricant where the throttle cable connected to the engine and that seems to have fixed it... at least for now. I am not sure if it was the lube or the computer reset that fixed it. I don't know where the "blipper" is but at least I will have something to tell them when I get it serviced again. I didn't get any codes or anything on the display... just an irritating high idle. :dontknow:

I was getting a high idle, 08 Sm5 [19/22 hundred] I WD 40ed. under the hand grip where it hits the start switch box, Idle is back to normal.

So is the blipper adjustable? We just picked up 2012 RTS ES and it seems to me the blipper over blips and accelerates while trying to slow down. While I have been riding for almost 40 years and can compensate, my wife is a new rider and I wouldn't want this to get her in trouble. Any thoughts?

In the previous discussion in this thread applies to GS/RS models 2012 and earlier. They have a solenoid that physically blips the throttle to 2000 rpm. Your RT is throttle by wire and the throttle is controlled by the ECM. Nothing there to adjust.
 
Sorry to sound dumb, but what is a Blipper Solenoid?

The Blipper Solenoid opens the throttle to rev the engine to 2000 rpm to assist with gear changes when needed. This applies to SE5 models of GS/RS models 2012 and earlier. RTs, newer RSs and STs have computer controlled throttles and the software handles blipping the throttle when needed.
 
The blipper is not adjustable. I believe your dealer can test it. Hiigh idle rpm can be caused by a failed blipper solenoid, vacuum leak, failed purge valve, and other factors. Best to let your dealer troubleshoot and repair it. He can test some of the involved components.
 
Things to check the HCM (hydraulic control module) oil pressure, check the TCM (transmission control module) for problems, and check the wiring connections between the blipper and the TCM. Check for bad grounds and connections around the battery. Make sure the battery is in good condition. I hope this helps.

It can also indicate that the clutch is failing.
