SITS and New DPS

:agree: If it is known that the old one is faulty, what is the excuse NOT to have it done? I guess people want to wait until they have a problem...not a good idea...

I am waiting to let those that have had problems get theirs taken care of first. Sure, we may be only 2 Spyders in the group but since we haven't had any problems with ours I don't feel a need to jump in front of others who really need the new units right now due to problems they have had.

That is just my reason. I will get it done sometime soon, as things begin calming down again and the dealers are not putting people on waiting lists.

dps

i guess if they have a safety recall on a car on the steering if you have not experience it would you still not take it in hand have it fix well i think it the same with the spyder, why wait until you have a crash or it quits. sooner or latter brp will not pay for all this. just my 2 cents worth. i might have over payed on this lol

Yea I am on the waiting list for the new DPS. I have a replacement DPS right now that I don't especially like, so I am hopeing once I get the new DPS I will like the steering better. I ride my to and from work, but I haven't really ridden for fun in a while.

That's a risk I'm willing to take. You don't know me or my Spyder. We have developed a very spirited relationship and I know this machine very well. I love it the way it is. I don't want it changed. That is my right as the owner of this bike. When I am engaged in a ride through the terrain I ride through, the margin for error is extremely small. When I do it with the aggression that I do it with that margin shrinks even more. Before I hit this strip I always do a pre-check to make sure everything is go before I enter. When you ride this way you have to be committed and confident in your equipment. I am. After that first DPS change with the RS-S, I know that I could never charge like that again if I did it on 14. That is not something that is acceptable to me. So it's not going to happen until this unit fails. PERIOD.

I for one never complained about the DPS. I was fortunate I guess in that I did not experience the problems that many seemed to. Both of my machines were perfect. Now my RS-S is not the same nor will it ever be, and I don't care for it now. If you like yours, I'm very glad that it worked for you. My RS-S is now compromised. With all due respect, I will not let that happen to 14.

My Nickel's worth....have it done.An earlier bike of mine(I no longer have it) decided to hang left "hard" when I was doing 70mph on a six lane highway.....twice.Not good.My saving grace was that we were on a straight section of the road. It's an experience that you do not want!
You,obviously love taking your machine to the edge, beautiful!!!I will say no more other than a correction at very high speed due to a steering failure would be something that I would not be able to control.
You never know, you might even learn to love the new DPS unit!

Wish I had mine done by Alcoa but Firefly talked me out of it...TURNCOAT!! :roflblack:

Have a call into my "local" dealer (76 miles) and am on the Waiting List. Not overly concerned since I don't feel that my steering is unsafe after a 6000 miles trip in May and this last week in Gatlinburg. I figure that, since I have a documented call into the dealer, I should be okay as far as warranty is concerned should I have a problem.

Sorry bro--- I still stand by my advice --- don't have something major fixed on the road unless you MUST. My DPS they put in was the last one they had-- and I was sweating bullets the whole time wondering if I was gonna get stuck in TN for another few days!

As far as 'warranty' --- shouldn't matter at all as this is a recall -- for all Spyders-- regardless of whether they are under warranty or not.

I am so proud and thankful to Alcoa Good times for all their effort to get the extra recall units ordered and on hand to handle the traffic from the rally. I was told they spent a considerable amount of time with BRP to get this accomplished.
Mine was done in under 2 hours, while I waited for the great lunch they provided. Mine was not broke and I had only minor problems with it, but I love the new one. It holds a line in the corners much better than the old one did. Pleasure to ride. Thanks again to Charlie and Jill at Alcoa. :2thumbs:

I appreciate your input, and I apologize to Dudley if I came off a little strong there. Deep down I know you guys are right- I should probably have this done. But this machine talks to me. And she's fine.

Now I know what yer thinkin...:yikes: I'm OK, really!! I can't explain it any other way. 14 let's me know when things are going well and when there could be trouble. It's hard to explain the kind of connection I have with this darned thing, but it exists. I had the same connection with my Vette. Jolene (That was her name) would always let me know what was up and I could anticipate things as a result. We never failed each other. Saved my butt on more than one occasion. And 14 and I have that same connection.

I would never push 14 past what I thought she could do, and she will always let me know if something is wrong. But given all of the factors and other considerations involved, plus the input of this group, plus a discussion with my number one, my Wife... I have decided to relent. I will call the dealer and tell them to put me at the absolute back of the list. Do every other Spyder first, as they are the ones who really need it - and then at some point you can do 14. I figure that will buy me some time, take pressure off of them and fulfill what I reckon is a legal obligation to get this taken care of.

When you push as hard as I do it makes sense to have the best parts available installed - the concensus seems to be that this G2 setup fits that category - so it shall be done. I'm going kicking and screaming mind you!! - but it shall be done. It'll be OK I guess.

Now I gotta go tell 14 at some point and hope she doesn't take this too hard! Now I know what yer thinkin... I'm OK, really!! :yikes: :roflblack: :roflblack:

Raptor, I can understand your feelings. I am not an "on the edge" rider, have never had any issue with the steering...our Spyder has been as perfect as you can find. It has had it's own little things that had to be warranted, but it has never let us down. We have a bond with it like you have with yours. I'd like to have an RT for more comfort, but Jennifer says no because our SE5 is proven. When the time comes to part with it, with it will go a lot of memories...the fondest memories, of our trip last summer.

For what it's worth--- Seth told me his opinion of the new DPS---- "Kicks serious :cus:!". He rydes harder than most - and considering he's only using his arms, I consider his opinion to be the real deal.

I too have been put on a "list" by my dealer to have it done. Called about 2 weeks ago on this. I called them today and asked when I would be getting the new DPS and was told that they have to get the part in from BRP. I asked if they had ordered it. They told me NO that BRP was sending them 1 when they returned another.

I told them that this was ridiculous - why not call BRP and tell them you have "X" number of spyders that have called requesting DPS changes and have them send more than 1 at a time. Especially as you are to advise us not to ryde our spyders until the DPS is fixed. If a dealer has to send back an old DPS to be able to get another one in "This is going to take forever." :yikes:

Obviously there are ways around the '1 for 1 exchange' as Alcoa had 40 of them in stock and ready to install--- and they could have used more!

Kind of went off on the dealer and told them that other dealer seemed to be able to get multiples - what was their problem? They called me back about 10 minutes later and guesss what - a DPS for my Spyder appeared.

Supposed to drop it off in the AM and get it done.

Funny how that works, aint it Bill? :2thumbs: Good for you brother. If you want it, you should be able to get it. Especially if they (BRP) are pimpin it so much! Sometimes the dealer is the fly in the ointment. My dealer said the same thing about the send one in get one back program that BRP is doing regarding this - But they are astill getting like 8 or 9 at a time.

Funny how quickly things can change. :D

Best of luck with getting it installed tomorrow.

Good to read the info I was given as this recall was getting started was accurate... Good to read of another member being safe and happy with the end results :2thumbs::spyder2:

After resting for a few days after the trip back--- got a chance to take the Spyder out today--- hit some of my regular twisties--- and WOW----- this new DPS ROCKS! Much much better than before..

Get it done !:2thumbs:

I might be getting mine done sooner that later. I really need a new set of front tires, and could also use an alignment as well. I think I may be able to "convince" them to include an alignment as part of the DPS change out, as the inside of my right front tire is totally gone. I will have to start making some phone calls to see what happens.

New Box, New Shocks... BIKE ROCKS!!

My Spyder Brothers and Sisters -

It is done. I took 14 to the dealer this morning and had my new RT shocks installed and DPS recall done. It almost seemed like she knew something was going on - SHe was kinda studdery and took a while to get going this morning. But we pressed on - I was gentle! - and we got to the dealer. I checked in and went down stairs to visit with the boys in parts. I was nervous - I felt like I was in a waiting room while a loved one was in surgery.

As time went on I got more jittery. ANd then Brian (my tech) came down to talk to me. They knew how concerned I was about the DPS change. But he was very confident. He didn't say much - just asked me to follow him with this funny look on his face. I was going crazy inside!

We got to 14 and she looked different somehow. He asked of course if I noticed anything different. She was sitting up just a tiny bit higher - which I liked! That was the shocks doing that. He explained that the DPS change went without a hitch and everything was just fine. Then he looked at me and said simply - "This bike is going to handle very differently from now on. Yer gonna like it"! These shocks are SICK!

First off, the RT shock has a spring that is approximately 100 pounds stiffer than the stock RS shock. And now the bonus - THEY ARE BLACK! The valving and preloads are a bit different as well which makes them behave in a very different manner. Team that with the new, very precise steering box and the Evo sway bar - and you have an extremely dynamic suspension package. These components work extremely well together.

I took the rest of the day off so that I could get to know the "new" 14. I was very excited but nervous as well. What transpired was both completely unexpected and totally satisfying. This bike is meaner now than she ever was.

The shocks have made the biggest impact on it's handling characteristics to be sure. But the combo of everything is simply fantastic. There is virtually zero body roll now, which allows you to be much more aggressive in how you hold the corners. This comes in most handy on those speed sweepers. The new DPS makes setup and execution much more precise. And the new shocks provide a rock solid feel and hold the bike to the road with a steel grip! I can actually throw 14 around now even harder than before and she just holds. This is a truly amazing transformation.

Before I even knew it I found myself in Monterey. SO I tooled around a bit, started north along the coast and found a beach to eat my lunch. I then had the pleasure of riding north on highway one with serious stupid smile syndrome going on while watching yet another incredible California coast stretch until the marine layer crept its way in. I turned inland and carved up some more twisties, just in awe of the ease and precision in which I was doing it. The work was a resounding success. These RT shocks were the key to it all. If you had any thought about upgrading your RS shocks but got put off buy the prospect of shelling out 2 grand for a set of Elka's or Penske's, this is your answer. 248 Bucks! WOOOOO-HOOOOO! 14 is alive and better than ever! :2thumbs:
