Audio Only GPS - How can I do this?

We normally listen to the FM radio on our RT-S. I have the TomTom GPS app on my iphone which works fine for me. I listen to the GPS routing instructions through a single earbud. This allows me to listen to the FM radio also. The volume is high enough on the iphone so it drowns out the FM radio audio when the routing instructions are announced. Kind of crude but it works.

Is there a way to hook up the iphone's audio out to the spyder's audio system so the spyder's audio is muted when the iphone's GPS speaks?

Ahhh Rick- I'm a Wayne Central Graduate so bear with me , I still have the 315'r genes.... The RTS audio system has a electronic "cut" circuit to over-ride the audio when the factory installed Garmin sends an audio signal. This is built into the circuitry and uses a chip to over-ride the current audio source and mute. Tapping in to duplicate that isn't really viable. I'll give you a couple alternatives- 1) load up your iphone with a huge mix of your favorite tunes via itunes. If I remember correctly the GPS program "talks over" the itunes app . This would get you music with your gps without using the earbuds once you're plugged into the audio in within your trunk. If you like the iphone up front with you, grab a stereo extension cable (6 foot works fine) and route it under seat to the trunk jack. Second option, similar to the first, buy a inexpensive xm or sirius add on radio at bestbuy , use a 1/8" y-splitter and run the joined iphone and satellite radio feed to the "aux in" in the trunk. Run the iphone at max volume and it will squelch the radio. Lastly , Griffin makes a plug in FM radio for the iphone, which your tom-tom application should talk over and it has a handy remote control......( http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/navigate ) however--wbee and wcmf get repetitive after awhile anyways... :roflblack:

The GPS harness is Garmin specific, will absolutely not help with what you are trying to do. It comes off the back of the Garmin specific GPS mount and has if I remember correctly 16 pins to the 16 lead connector. If you like listening to wease , just download iheart radio (google it or just downlaod it from 95.1 or weases website) on your iphone and stream 95.1 to it (its live), the sound quality is awesome and it solves 100% of your issues: GPS works , wease talks :2thumbs: and nothin to buy!

Just for your info the GPS harness has three connections. One is a switched 12v output and another is the ground for same. The remaining connector is a male 3.5mm audio input plug. Any audio source hooked up to the 3.5mm input will mute whatever is playing through the RT's audio system and replace it with the source's audio when it becomes active. I have tested this and whether it is the RT's AM, FM, or the trunk's aux input in all cases the muting feature works.

I will be using the Tom Tom GPS app on my Iphone. I have a RAM mount ball installed. Now, where to put a 12v plug and male 3.5mm input jack? I have the filler plates for the gauges so I could remove the gauges and install them there. I just don't know if that's the route I want take.

I have a 2011RT-S ordered with cb/com and am trying to find some information on how to hook up my Garmin 855. So far I plan on running the power harness to a Cen Tec fuse box, the 3.5mm audio wire to the plug in the trunk.
I think I should be able to hear the gps mp-3 music through my J&M headsets and the Garmin will mute the music for alerts; does this sound possible?

You're going to love your new 2011 RT-S. I'm not familiar with the cb/com package.

The input in the trunk is the "aux" input. It is only active when audio system set to "aux" via the control panel. If you plan on using the Garmin's internal mp3 player and hook the unit's audio line-out to the trunk's "aux" input then the Garmin does the muting.

If you plan on using the AM/FM radio or any other audio along with the Garmin things change. To achieve muting of the RT-S's audio system the GPS Adaptor harness part# 710002182 is required. Not only does it mute the radio but also anything hooked up to the trunks "aux" input. Here is video on a GPS install using the harness.

In essence the harness allows you to have a second "aux" input that takes priority (via muting) over the RT-S audio system. You could send the audio from the Garmin to the audio input on the harness and listen to the Garmin's mp3 player via that route also.
All of this assumes there has been no changes to the 2011 RT-S.

The link does not work, if I understand this correctly I can plug my Garmin 855 ( not a Zumo ) directly into the Spyder radio,with the harness and not have to use the aux plug. Will the gps and the gps mp-3 work as designed with the J&M headsets.

It plugs into an existing connector on the RT-S. All that is required is to send the audio from any GPS, iphone, mp3 player, etc. to the male 3.5mm audio plug on the harness. The cable from the device will have to have a 3.5mm female audio jack on one end to connect to the harness or if it's a male plug you can get a 3.5mm adapter from Radio Shack. The red wire is +12v and the black is ground. If your going to get power for the GPS from another source you can cut the red and black wires off or shield them. I ordered the harness (BRP part# 710002182) from Apache Motorcycle in Phoenix (slow) but you can order from your dealer for a few bucks more (~$60.00).

ok Others have said that it doesnt come thru the BRP headsets only the 3rd party non BRP ones with an adapter cable... :gaah:

but you can hear via the canam speakers

That's a bit confusing as the GPS harness is the same one used by the BRP supplied GPS (Zumo 660).

I now wonder since it was stated that input from the harness mutes out everything does it also mute out the CB. I have a 32GB card in my Zumo 660 with a ton of music. I don't care that the FM is muted, but would like to know if everything else works.

I can't speak for the Spyder system, as I do not have it, but for most systems, including my Starcom1, the GPS input takes precedence. As a result, when the GPS gives directions, my intercom or music input to the comm system will mute. If I play music via the GPS, the comm system will stay muted all the time. I expect the BRP system is the same. Music and other traffic through the audio inputs would be muted when the GPS is active, so if you play music continuously through your GPS, the system would stay muted all the time.
