What are some good programs/sites to better plan rYdes with that will not only show good roads to rYde on but nearby services?

I vote for "GPS Roulette". First, set the GPS options to the type of roads you'd like to ride. Widen your GPS map view to the distance you want to travel, or scoll in a general diection, then close your eyes, touch the screen, and pick a random spot, landmark, or city. Tell the GPS to go there, and you are off on an adventure of discovery. Sometimes the roads are good, sometimes bad, and sometimes great...but it is always new and exciting.

I agree Scotty. I love GPS roulette. Even on rather local roads (100-150 mile ride) it works great. Since my husband hasn't been able ride much because of back issues this summer, in order to get my riding fix I start out from home and with GPS set to no gravel. I go 40 or 50 miles of turning off on random roads and then ask GPS lady to take me home the shortest way. I have had some great rides on roads I would never have discovered. The Spyder is great for this type of riding since you don't worry about hitting a recently tarred and chipped road with loose gravel or having to make a u-turn if the road doesn't prove out.

Those sites look good Brian. I'm looking for something to better plan a group rYde being aware of nearby fuel/food stops or if that county rd is paved or not. Also what would be cool would be an interactive map that you can set "bingo points". For instance, you're taking a 3000 mile journey across the wilderness, which you just did. Our bikes/butts average 120 mi between fill ups. Some of us can do this in a hour (without mentioning names). Sometimes it must take much longer. So where is the closest gas station to our "bingo point"? Oddly enuff, there isn't an app for the iPhone/Pad along this line. I know most GPS's can give this info on the roll but I'm looking for something at home.

Google Maps can find the gas stations near your "Bingo points". Microsoft Streets (Now MS Streets & Trips) works for setting stops based on fuel mileage, but I don't remember it doing timed stops. It will do start and stop times for the trip, and select road types. It also will link to the Internet to show construction zones.

You type in the start and end points and while it will route you the fastest route, it has a click and drag feature that let's you choose whatever route you want. You can pick what services you want it to show (gas, food, lodging, points of interest). Worked great for our Lake michigan loop. You can print it in whatever level of detail you want.

I know...they are the "industry standard" but they can't do something simple like this. In fact, they should be able to display ALL types of POIs just like the Garmin GPS does. Obviously, they're available

I find it interesting that you can display real estate agents on a GoogleMap but nothing else

I have no trouble displaying hotels, gas stations, campgrounds, restaurants, etc. When you have the map displayed, click the "What's Around Here?" button at the top near the search box. It will display an asterisk and a bunch of POIs. If you just want to see gas stations, type in "gas stations" in place of the asterisk. It won't display gas stations, hotels, and real estate agents together, unless you select the asterisk search, but it will display one type of POI you want to see.
