• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

BRP Ultra Touring Windshield - Installation / Comments

Hi guys.

Just installing my 25" BRP Ultra Touring Windshield now and the instructions state to install two plastic screws (in both top holes - one left and one on the right) and install the metal screws in the two lower holes).


Ah... plastic screws .... should we trust those plastic screws on a windshield... Or should I replace them with two left over metal screws from my stock windshield?!:dontknow::dontknow:

For those of you who installed the BRP Touring shields before... what did you do, what do you recommend?

Just my guess but plastic scews might be to hold windshield temp. While you line up bottom holes. Then use metal fasteners in all holes. I wouldn't ride with plastic fasteners....freebob..:doorag:

I used all metal screws, But i didn't keep the touring shield for more than 4 or 5 months
It didn't work out for me, the wind would batter me on the highway.

That was my thought also, that it was just temporary to hold in place while other screws were put in place. It just does not specifically say that in the instructions is all.. Just wanted to check and be sure, is all.

I would not use plastic screws either. I have metal screws on mine and it's held up for nearly 23K+ miles.

Ok… I just installed the windshield and accompanied wind deflectors. I did find the fumes a good bit with the deflectors installed. Going to take them off and have another test ride and see how that works.

I had the same thing happen too, Fumes with the deflectors installed.:shocked:
But they will keep you warm when winter comes along.
 
My guess is that it is a perceived safety issue. If the rider is thrown forward in a collision, the plastic screws will break, allowing the windshield to flop forward without shattering up high, leaving jagged edges that could impale the rider. Many fairings with large shields use these plastic screws. Personally, I could care less. If I am thrown off the Spyder that hard, I'm likely to be injured anyway. I'd rather use the metal screws.

If you do use the plastic screws, be careful. They break easily if they bind up...and they bind up readily.

:agree:But I did use the plastic screws with no problems, but Roger snapped one of his.

I've just taken them off... but need to test ride again to be sure the fumes are gone with the deflectors are off.


Indeed, I have already put them away for the winter coming to help keep me warm in the cold. Better for that time of year I suspect, rather then smell the fumes now in the heat.

Ok… just got back from a 125km ryde with the new BRP Ultra Touring 25" windshield…. with some comments.

It works! Big difference of course between the stock and this 25" one. Does a good job keeping the wind away around me, up and over me. Also notice it keeps the wind off my hands, so much so I'm surprised and suspect it will be a great help come fall and this winter.

When my dealer's tech installed it he simply reused the existing metal screws and the washers.
 
I just recently had the dealer install the touring windshield and the lowers on my spyder. Don't know about what screws were used but, I'm sorry at this point that I had this put on. The heat fumes, and noise are now trapped behind the windshield. The heat is the worse,,, it is absolutely unbearable,,, no fun to ride at all!!

I uninstalled my wind deflectors for the summer and will put them back on in the fall and winter for cold weather riding.

+I use the deflectors year round because they provide some wet protection, and I'm comfortable with them in place. (I tolerate temperature extremes well, hot or cold.)

Re the windshield, I have the plastic screws properly in place and haven't experienced any concerns in lotsa' miles.

I have the 23 in. windshield with the deflectors installed. I found that if I put a 1/8 in. plastic spacer behind the top "metal" screws there is a little more air coming up the back side of the windshield helping to get rid of heat and fumes. The reason for the plastic screws is if you go over the bars the windshield breaks lose easy.
 
BRP 23" Windshield

I installed the 23" BRP Ultra Touring Windshield. Overall, I like it.

Big Iron is correct, it does trap the heat between you and the windshield. The heat bothers me, a bit, on really hot days while stopped at the lights.

One of the plastic screws cracked when I installed them (guess I don't know my own strength). Instead I used metal screws on all four holes with a rubber washer on each.
 
I have the 25" ultra and put about 400 miles on my new spyder with it. A little head buffeting so I installed the deflectors and that completely eliminated the head buffeting,but the fumes and engine noise were more than I could handle. So I got out the Bandsaw and trimed the deflectors a little and that eliminated the fumes. I still get some buffeting, but I guess I can live with it.
 
I neglected to mention that I did not have the deflectors installed.

I absolutely do not have a fumes issue or buffeting as reported by others.

Again, I love my 25" ultra.
