How long does the O2 Sensor last?

Hey guys.

I've read a few posts the last month or so, in passing about the O2 Sensor on the RS/GS. Wondering a few things about it.

1. Typically, how many miles do you get out of one (when did yours go?)?

2. If it does go, do you enter LIMP mode, or is it something that you can still get home in without entering LIMP mode?

3. I have read about the P0170 - Lambda regulation: Oxygen Sensor Functional Problem.
Just wondering if you guys have seen any other codes related to the O2 sensor?


I did get the P0170 code before, but I think it was related to the y gaskets, that have been since replaced.

I,m not sure how long they last [I have 22000km on mine when I took it off] and replaced it with a Evoluzione 02 modifier $85. and shipping from ExtremeKempy.com and the bike has never run so smooth with minimal popping.One thing it may do is reduce fuel mileage though, will monitor it and see,we have been getting extreme temps. and humidity since putting it on this week.I have the Hindel,J.B. and Evoluzione filter.

Got 4k miles out of mine....

It throws a check engine scroll on the cluster. No limp mode. Just runs kinda crappy at steady throttle. Wide open throttle, you'd never know there was an issue. Though... Mine being bad caused a lot of oil to burp up through the crank case vent that connects to the air box.... Might be isolated to just my case... not sure. I have an oil catch can, and it pushed about a 1/3 quart out through that alone.

I'm getting 32mpg with the same setup, just depends where you have the JB set.

PCBeachBum just had the Evoluzione O2 sensor installed on his Spyder and told me he notices a big improvement. The Spyder tends to run lean in the first place, and it seems that for those of us in the hot and humid areas it gets worse. I am thinking this may be the next mod I buy for my Spyder as well.

I have over 11,000 miles on mine right now, and as far as I can tell it is still good.

Let me add... That the check engine scroll and light comes on... Turn off the bike, count to ten... Fire it back up, no more code. Drive on.

Did that twice to me, the first time I though the Spyder was just screwing with me for fun.

I could actually notice the odd behavior of the bike even at 75 MPH on I-95 south of Jacksonville.... By time I got into Daytona, and was heading over to see Forest, the high heat of the day + the humidity was really bringing out the symptoms of the bad O2 sensor. Felt like she was either loading up, or missing a cylinder in short little cycles while at steady throttle - In any gear and across a wide RPM range.

I wouldn't say an O2 sensor is a common Spyder failure, but it is one of the things to look out for. I wouldn't rank it as high as the Y gaskets, or the oil sending unit in regard to odds of failure.

Hi Michael, thanks for the note. It does not get near as hot / humid here as it does there. I did think about the O2 sensor upgrade, but decided to continue with the stock sensor, for now.
