Over the weekend I rode @750 miles. Typically I run at 2 green lights on the LED battery gauge at 4000 rpm or higher and the spyder runs at 3 bars on the highway (65 mph or higher) in 90 degree weather.
Saturday it was in the 90's and the Spyder went to 4 bars before exiting the highway and I was down to 1 green light on the meter doing 75 mph. After getting off the highway (the bars went to 6) and parking the spyder I noticed the Y panel was extremely hot. What first came to mind was that I had a blown right side gasket on the exhaust and the battery was on its way out and I wasn't anywhere near home.
Later after the spyder cooled, I thought it was quite a coincidence that both things happened at the same time. So, I opened the trunk and pulled the panel covering the the fuse/relay box. I reseated all the relays; the largest appeared to be loose. The next day I started the spyder and headed home with 2 green lights and 3 bars.
I know I'm probably the only one that doesn't periodically check the relays
pps:. From now on I'll be checking the relays more often. A valuable lesson learned.
I'm guessing here; but, does the large relay control the fan and the charging system (magneto)?
