Spyder DRAG RACING

Magnum Force

Well, my friend and I took our wives and their Spyders to the Drags last evening. We took his Porche 928 and the girls bikes are both 2009 SE5's. One is stone stock, the other has bags, hindle, and tall windscreen.
A good time was had by all.
They really drew a lot of attention that is for sure. We had a lot of trouble getting the Spyders to hook up at the line. They would spin and then bog when they did hook up. I ran 3 - 14.70's in a row with my wifes with the hindle. If not fast, at least very consistant! My friend ran a little better with his best being a 14.30 with their RS. Top speeds were just under 100 mph.
Oh, and the Porche ran low 14's also.
Next time the girls said they want to try it. They both just passed their roadtests here in NY this last week and aren't quite ready to do 100 mph yet. Both have logged over 1500 miles since we purchased them at the end of March so they do pretty well on them, just not race ready quite yet!
All in all, the spyders ran pretty well with no mishaps. They ran respectable times for what they are. We feel that with a little tuning (juice box) and lowering tire preasure, etc. we could get them into the mid 13's. We didn't want to touch tire pressure on this trip because the spyders were ridden to and from the track. A little over an hour each way.

welcome It sounds like everyone is having a good time with the :spyder2:s. How mant RPM's were you turning when you shifted, or did you let it shift itself? I'd like to run mine down the track a couple of times, just for the h--- of it, but would appreciate any "edge" that ypu could give me.:ohyea:

We shifted them just shy of redline. You could feel the power ban drop off at about 8 to 8.5. The SE5 only downshifts by itself, you have to upshift it. Basically you hammed the throttle wide open, held on tight, and hit the + when it hit 9000 rpm. We would be in 4th gear when we crossed the finish line. It really couldn't be easier. I have raced bikes before, and this was much easier. No wheelies to worry about, and pretty much goes in a straight line. Oh, and one more thing. When you line up at the start, be sure you line up with your rear wheel in one of the car tire lines. Stay to the right or left. The center can be slick from things leaking from the cars. I hope this all helps.

Thnx for the info. I hadn't had my first cup of coffee when I posted the first time, so that possibly had some thing to do with the comment about automatic upshifting, or possibly a "senior moment". :yikes::roflblack::roflblack:

You know I remember looking up 0-60 times for sport cars and to purchase one that did 0-60 in 4.5 sec, or less you would have to pay $100,000 or more!
:spyder2:Not so bad a Deal?

Your source must have omitted the corvette. I know the Z06 is at least that quick, and the base model is not too far behind. Car and Driver clocked a Z06 at 3.6. Both models can be had for far less than 100K. I'm pretty sure there are other cars out there that are that quick. Our spyders are quick and high on cool quotient, but I'm sorry to say: we're not that elite.

I'm not bashing the Spyder. I love mine immensely, it's just not the only fast and cool thing on the road.

Some here have theirs down to about 4 seconds with some mods...free flowing air, JB, hindle, etc...4.5 is pretty darn good...at 4.0, not much with 4 wheels is gonna beat ya...

best I have done, if anyone has done better I would like to know, is a 12.65 adn 101.7 is my best trap time.

the 60 feet times are what F U in drag racing , need to try a drag tire just have not wanted to switch one out just for doing it.

I got a .001 R/T time last week and the best I did then was 13.29, I did over 20 runs and all were within a mph, which i consider butt slow. different pipe made that big of a difference.

Doc is the other one in the video of course

GREAT Video! thanks for sharing. We went on such a spur of the moment that we even forgot a camera.
Were both bikes in the video SM5's. They seemed to come out of the gate a lot better then our SE5's did. With just the foot brake and the autos, we couldn't come out with enough RPM's.
If the bike with the corbin bags had been red, the video could have passed for us with better times :D.

haha, no, I am in a wheelchair so i have an se5, what you do is load up the brake so that the clutch engages and when the second light goes out let the brake go and it all throttle control to make sure the tire doesn't break away but you are still gettin on it. having a SE5 your shifts down the track with it pegged will save you time so for drag racing you are at a advantage.

OK, That is pretty much what I was doing. I use to race bikes so it wasn't new to me, it has just been some time since I have done it.
I think part of the problem with my wifes was that with the Hindle it seems to be running lean and falters a bit off idle. You get some hesitation. The other bike with stock exhaust ran a 14.1 best time and seemed to come out of the gate without the bogg but still with a lot of wheel spin.
You are right about the electric shift, it does work a lot better than fanning the clutch once you are moving.
Again, nice video :2thumbs:

And there are several two wheelers that will smoke the Spyder.... I see a pattern. Again, I love my spyder, but it is far from the baddest thing on the road. Lets not exaggerate.

I think it should be the other way around, There are only several that,
CAN'T smoke the Spyder! The Spyder is quick, But in the world of bikes It's a little above mid range, The only bike iv'e owned that the Spyder might have been faster than was a Suzuki 500 cc.
Fast is a relative term. [no new rope]

I agree entirely. I think you were more effective at making the point I was trying to. :2thumbs:

Fast is a relative, I use this daily talking to people, I tell people compared to any lawn tractor harvey danielson it will beat it but a modern sportbike will kill you so its all in what is fast for you.

My standard is a motorcycle should be able to be driven at 150mph, yes I am crazy and not 150 is not fast to me its just a standard I use because I police charger can go 145mph. I know you can not out run a radio so save that comment for your kids.

Fast the spyder is not! It has quite a bit of torgue and bottom end like most twin cylinder bikes.
My kids always say "it is what it is"
I have always hated that saying and say "it is what you make of it"
IT IS FUN! To my wife it is fast, compared to my bike it is a lead sled.
