Spyder's broke :(

I have made an appointment to get my Spyder looked at because it has been having some trouble idling. Seems to be running rich. This is something that has been getting slowly worse over the last 6 months and the last few days have been pretty darn unpleasant. Highway is fine but this stopping and starting in the city kills my idling. Unfortunately, it took a turn for the worse tonight about a mile from home. (On a positive note, I was only a mile from home. J ) I was in third gear when the bike suddenly lost power and my reverse sign appeared, flashing in the display. That stopped after about 20 seconds and I regained power. Then the error sign appeared followed by a check engine readout on the display and the engine light. Got it home and in my garage when. By that time, I had my Neutral sign flashing, the Reverse light flashing and the engine light flashing. I’ve got 15,596 miles on it now. Owned it for a year and a half. I’ve been very happy with this machine so far. Can’t get in to the shop until the 9th of April. Hope they won’t have it long and I will be back on the road. Until then, you guys and gals are gonna have to be out there riding for me. Make me proud! J

Have them order a GPS while you are waiting. Yours sounds bad. It will cause all manner of problems like you have reported.

Thanks everyone.

Hello Scotty,
I’m gonna run it by them to see if they will order the part in advance but have my doubts. I was able to find another place to work on it who has scheduled me for Friday the 2nd, instead of the 9th. That’s cool.

Roaddog,
Got the CHAD installed, works great but just can’t take the looks. Probably gonna part with it.

Thanks Spyderwolf. Just got the date bumped up by a week for repairs. That’s cool.

Yo Ypilot,
The 225 is definitely the plans. Get my 2 wheel cylinders replaced this week and hopefully get it to a car show this Friday weather permitting. What’s the latest on your dealings with Marcel?

Some cheese with my wine please.

Wanted to get back with you all. Had the Spyder serviced at Ted's Motorcycle World in Alton, IL. I got it out of the shop Friday evening. 4 days earlier than expected. That was cool. They did the update to the update, replaced the gear sensor thing inside the engine. It was all warranty work thank God. They also pop-riveted new rivets in the Hindle Exhaust cover which was rattling. I really appreciated that. Now the bad part of the story.
I rode it home to St. Louis. (probably 40+ miles away and it ran great on the highway. As I'm riding it on the highway, I notice the RPM's are very high.... well the RPM's on the dial are high but the digital display are normal. ie. digital readout is 5000, and dial reads 7800. Woops.... but that fixes upon shutting off the Spyder and restarting it. Been fine ever since. I reached the city and while waiting at a stoplight, it dies on me and idles terribly. Two of the problems I sent it into the shop for to begin with. Grrrr.
I should of drove it around a while in Alton to make sure it was ok but wasn't thinking. I mean, when someone calls you and says it is fixed and ready to be picked up. You're excited and ready to roll. I get a ride there and am ready for the ride home. I unfortunately thought fixed meant fixed. My mistake.
I called Ted's when I got home and the guy said I could certainly bring it back in, that wasn't a problem.
Well I appreciate that but I am home now and you are 40+ miles away again. I need a ride back gosh :cus:.
I have now scheduled another appointment with Saint Louis Power Sports in Fenton, MO. Around 15 miles away. Only a 3 week wait to get it in there again.
So it is going back into the shop for 3 things.
Idles rough and dies.
I have something rattling and clunking underneath the Spyder and the sound slows as the Spyder does. Looked underneath and at the suspension but don't see anything loose.
And last but not least, I get a very noisy rough sound coming from what I believe is under the dash. Sounds something like a computer working very hard but doesn't make the noise when stopped and is intermittent when riding. Makes the noise for say 10 seconds, stops for 2, then continues on for 20, stops for 4 seconds then starts again. It is intermittent but plenty loud. Anybody else have this sound?

I know my friend's Maxima instrement panel lights blink like a haunted xmas tree when the battery is just about to go bad. My Ninja too gets all sorts of weird problem (won't start, dies on shifting gear ... etc.) and a fresh battery changed all that. Have you tried a new battery yet?

I have not.

I sure haven't. I'll run that by when it goes into the shop. I do have 16XXX miles on it. Bought the Spyder used in late Sept. 08 off of Craigslist. Thanks for the suggestion.

Dang, sorry to hear you are having problems after just getting it back. I was hoping it was going to be good news for you, as it has been for many others on here lately.

Best of luck getting the trouble sorted out for good this time.

thanks Spyderwolf

Thanks Spyderwolf. God knows I would love to be out on it right now but I guess them's the brakes. I'm trying to focus on the saying, " When given lemons, make lemonade. If I can't ride it for a month, what am I gonna due do with my time? I need to be productive. One thing I'm gonna do is get the Buick ready for the car shows and get it sold.
BTW, how's the graphics holding out on your machine?

I totally understand about keeping busy. Too bad you have to wait to get it into the shop, as my old dealer had everything done for the second update while I waited. I have another hobby I have totally neglected since getting the Spyder, and have been thinking of selling all of that equipment as well.

The graphics are holding up great, still look like new in fact. I have a couple small rock hits where it took a tiny chunk of the paper off, but I am pretty sure I am the only one who ever looks close enough to know where they are. I still get asked where I got it painted like that all the time.

Still missing my ride.

Update to the update. Basically have not been on the spyder since April 2nd. They've replaced my GPS... ( good eye scotty! ) They've replaced a bad spark plug wire. Replaced both head gaskets. They've got my engine and trans tore apart. Found some bad bearings having to do with the drive belt. Unfortunately, one of the parts i need is on manufacture back order until the 14th of June. I sure miss my ride. Been two months now. :(

Bummer! but June 14th isn't that far away. But it must be hard not riding for all that time :( But you'll have it back for prime summer time.

Did you try asking the dealer for a loner since yours has been out of commission for so long? I know it's a long shot but can't hurt to ask.

Definitely not the update I know you were wanting, or the one I was hoping to hear for you. :(

Hopefully the parts will come in as scheduled, or perhaps a little early, and they can get you back on the road within a day or two of receiving them. Best of luck with the repairs.
