• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Overheating

For anyone experiencing HI TEMP, LIMP HOME MODE try this...exchange your relay for your 'lights' for your 'fan' and see if it does'nt turn the fan on after 5 bars on your temp. I was ready to take mine to the shop when my genius Husband found a website that suggested this and I'm back on the road!!!!:2thumbs:

If you have the old...

Tyco relays you may want to change all of them. There was a lot of original relays that were failing prematurely. Many of the autoparts stores O'Rileys, autozone and several others have good replacements of the proper power (amp) ratings.

The R3110 and R3109 are the after market small and large relay numbers. /Ken

temps

Boris, what was the website your husband went to, to make the changes. I'm having situations that I don't think should be happening. It's only 77 degrees or cooler with low humidity and my spyder is getting to 4 and 5 bars after only riding for less then a hour. The other issue is I'm getting a lot of backfiring from my Micron pipe when I get off the throttle. Does anyone have any thoughts. I'm going to the Finger Lakes in June and Smoky Mountains the first week in August, just a little worried, I have 6700 miles on my spyder. Thank you for any help or suggestions.

Sounds like you are running a ...

lean fuel mixture. As stated on other threads when you install a high performance exhaust and/or air filter it may cause the mixture to lean out. A juice box or similar fuel controller will eliminate the lean out.

Also our spyders regularly run 4 bars with occasional visits to the fifth bar but when we increase air flow by speeding up they go back to 4. Have you checked to make sure your water tank cap is seated? If not seated properly it will lower cooling system pressure increasing the temp. /Ken

Decel backfiring [popping] Is Almost always caused by a lean condition.

Four to five bars is not abnormal. The thermostat doesn't open until three, so that would be the normal minimum operating temperature. Like my BMW, my Spyders operate at about half the gauge most of the time. That is 4-5 bars. The running fan may be inconvenient blowing hot air on your foot, but it is doing what it was designed to do, just like the one in your car. If you run six bars on the highway during cool weather, or hit limp mode in stop-and-go...worry, but until then, I'd just ride.

If the backfiring is increased from before, and you have made no intake or exhaust changes, check for blown Y-pipe gaskets.

Thanks NancysToy, I was thinking about it the other day. When not moving it would get up to around 7+ bars at times, when riding, it would be anywhere from 4 to 5 bars normally. I was thinking there might be an issue since I was not sure myself.

My Husband found it on Can Am Spyder forum (subject: engine heat) we changed my relays today and he rode great...I'm going to look into these 'juice boxes' to fix my sputtering/surges...:f_spider:

I remember reading on here that the fan should go on at 5 bars and keep the temp at 5 bars no matter what the speed is). I know mine starts to complain as soon as it goes into 7 bars.

if your fan doesn't

come on at 5 bars you've probably got a relay or fuse problem. Also if you are getting to 7 bars check your coolant level and make sure the cap is seated fully.

I get to 5 bars... and as of this date I don't remember it getting higher than 6 and that was on a humid 95 degree day in stop and go traffic. Don't you just love traffic jams in the summer? /ken

Ken, at how many bars should the fan come on? I might have to change out the relay to get the fan to turn on sooner. 7 bars was sitting in traffic and not able to move on a very hot day.

:dontknow:
I don't know when the fan should come on , every Spyder is set up a little different from each other. [my opinion] My fan kicks on as soon as it hits 5 bars.

I changed over to Royal Purple and added Radiator Ice over the winter lay-up. It seems to run about one bar cooler this year so far. I can get it down to 2 bars cruising in low 70s. But I think this lean condition caused by the DPS update is making it run hotter. Will plug up the evap can next chance I get to see if it makes a difference.

Amen to that... the Spyders heat issue isnt with the cooling system, its with the fuel system.. give that mosheen some more fuel and you'd be surprised how your temps will drop.

Fan on at 5 bars when you are...

sitting still or going slow. When you've just been riding it so the temp is up to normal operating... stop and sit for a couple of minutes to see if the fan activates. If is doesn't come on before six there is a problem.

Nancy's Toy had some good information about what the temperature is at each one of the bars. I was looking for the thread / post but haven't found it yet.

If your fan does not come by six bars check the 15A fuse and switch out the fan relay with one of the other relays for a test.

Also if you need the relays... O'Riley's auto parts has the best price on them. The small one is R3110 about 9 bucks the large is R3109 about 16.
You can get a lifetime warranty for double those prices. I keep 2 on each spyder all the time and six or so in the parts cabinet all the time. It's not that they fail all that often but when I want to ride and it's bad... I want a spare ready in the cabinet. /Ken Just found a thread on the temp readings... Lamonster also had some good temp information. check this link http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13512
