ESI UP & OUT Mirror Review

Hello Everyone,
I have been having a heck of a time getting this review on line. We have had internet trouble all day. Anyway, let me fill you in.

This morning Brian was going to be a sweetheart and get my new ESI Mirror extensions on for me before I had to go get my rear tire changed out. As it turned out he was only able to get one done before it was time for me to leave. That ended up being a blessing in disguise. It gave me the opportunity to have one of each product on the spyder and to do a side by side comparison. First of all, let me start out by telling you, these are both great products, the Kewlmetal extensions and the ESI Extensions. I have had the Kewlmetal for a while now, probably 7 months or so. They continued to get looser on me until they were downright floppy. Now in Matt's defense, I never complained or told him about this. When he found out, he did offer to send me a special washer as a fix. I have been using plastic in the joint as a shim to keep the movement down. Well, I had talked to Evan and already decided to give the ESI Up & Out Extensions a try before I received Matt's response. So here is my honest side by side comparison, I also will post photos. Both of these Extensions give a much better view around your body and shoulders than the stock. Both are far superior in that way. I also found that both of the extensions also have way less vibration in the mirrors than stock. When I had the stock mirrors, there were times I got so much vibration I couldn't even see what was wiggling behind me. Since adding the ESI 3" risers I found I needed something, as with the stock mirrors all I saw was my hand. That is when I ordered the Kewlmetal and I actually ordered those from Evan, he didn't have his yet. They were a big help, I could still see my hand but I could also see around me and behind me. Hugh help in the safety department. I still think the Kewlmetal extensions are a good product and if Matt has the washer that is needed to prevent movement, they may be just what you are looking for. But after my review, I definitely prefer the ESI Up & Out mirror extensions, and here is why. Aa I mentioned, both have less vibration than the stock mirrors but the ESI have even less vibration than the Kewlmetal extensions. Both are an add on but I think the overall fit and look of the ESI extensions is better and flows with the line of the current mirror on the spyder. Now, here is the biggest selling point of all for me on the ESI extensions, I see even less of my hand. I have a lot more road and rearview in this mirror than anything I have tried yet. I can see all the way behind me without the interference of my own hand in my mirror. If you are looking for an excellent product at an excellent price to add to your spyder for safety, this is the way to go. If you have the risers and are having trouble because your hands are in your mirrors, this is the way to go. If you are getting a lot of vibration and movement, I recommend the ESI Up & Out Mirror Extensions. I think Evan hit a home run with these. Here are some photos from today.

View from the seat, you can see the left mirror is the ESI and is ever so slightly higher than the right mirror.

Kewlmetal right side with hand partly in mirror, better than stock and very good.

ESI Left side, can hardly see hand in mirror, excellent view,

I hope this helps anyone that is trying to make a decision. I really like these ESI Extensions and think they are a great product and addition to your spyder, especially if you have the risers.

Deb,
Great write up as usual. I too have the same problem with looking at my hands in the mirror (I have the Kewlmetal extensions). I have even thought about getting a wireless reverse camera with 4.5" screen and mounting it to my windshield. Since I have come close to being rear ended twice. I'm always concerned about what's going on behind me.

Great write-up... Mine should arrive next week.

Did you re-install those small plastic 'filler' rectangle pieces that go in the front?

Great write up Deb. Thanks for sharing that with us. I also lost one of my plastic inserts and haven't bothered checking to see if the other one is still there or not.

I actually had somebody that was going to rip one off of my wife's SE 5 while it was on display in Daytona. At first he wanted me to give him one and tried to explain to him it was a BRP part. That wasn't acceptable to him so he tried to take the left one off right in front of me!! :cus::cus: Could not beleve my eye!!!

That would also explain why Evan was very keen on making sure nobody was touching the Spyders you all had parked at your display. Dave01 had his GPS and other gizmos on there, and somebody actually asked me if it was the new Nuvo or something like that. That is when Evan stepped up and explained to me that little things like that have a way of disappearing from time to time.

Some people have a whole lot more nerve than they have sense. :lecturef_smilie:

We always try our best to work on, take care of, and watch over our customers Spyders and bikes just like they were our own. :agree:

That's why when I saw that guy pawing all Dave's Spyder I reminded him that the RT belonged to someone, and that someone was not him!

Any long time biker will tell you that proper etiquette says, you never put your hands on another man's wife or his bike. :lecturef_smilie:

Doing ether of which can get you in real trouble, real fast! :yikes:

Nope, no need, plus I think I lost them from before.

She doesn't know it yet but I knew exactly where those plastic filler pieces were and I did install them on the up and out risers using the goop that Magic Man included in the riser package. Got the second up and out extension installed this morning and now she's good to go.

If it wasn't for those plastic bushings that BRP uses in the mirror stalks, these would be real easy to install.

Sorry Evan, been working a lot, home now and having a chance to get caught up. To answer your question. I love them. No hands, no shoulders, great view of what is behind me. No or at least very little vibration, I can see clearly what is behind me and at a distance as well. Thank you, Thank you. You have done it a again. As I mentioned before, for anyone that wants just a better view, to feel safer and to eliminate those vibrating mirrors, this is the way to go. The fit and finish are nice and the look goes with the spyder. The Up & Out mirror extensions have my endorsement for whatever that is worth.
