Hello Everyone,
I have been having a heck of a time getting this review on line. We have had internet trouble all day. Anyway, let me fill you in.
This morning Brian was going to be a sweetheart and get my new ESI Mirror extensions on for me before I had to go get my rear tire changed out. As it turned out he was only able to get one done before it was time for me to leave. That ended up being a blessing in disguise. It gave me the opportunity to have one of each product on the spyder and to do a side by side comparison. First of all, let me start out by telling you, these are both great products, the Kewlmetal extensions and the ESI Extensions. I have had the Kewlmetal for a while now, probably 7 months or so. They continued to get looser on me until they were downright floppy. Now in Matt's defense, I never complained or told him about this. When he found out, he did offer to send me a special washer as a fix. I have been using plastic in the joint as a shim to keep the movement down. Well, I had talked to Evan and already decided to give the ESI Up & Out Extensions a try before I received Matt's response. So here is my honest side by side comparison, I also will post photos. Both of these Extensions give a much better view around your body and shoulders than the stock. Both are far superior in that way. I also found that both of the extensions also have way less vibration in the mirrors than stock. When I had the stock mirrors, there were times I got so much vibration I couldn't even see what was wiggling behind me. Since adding the ESI 3" risers I found I needed something, as with the stock mirrors all I saw was my hand. That is when I ordered the Kewlmetal and I actually ordered those from Evan, he didn't have his yet. They were a big help, I could still see my hand but I could also see around me and behind me. Hugh help in the safety department. I still think the Kewlmetal extensions are a good product and if Matt has the washer that is needed to prevent movement, they may be just what you are looking for. But after my review, I definitely prefer the ESI Up & Out mirror extensions, and here is why. Aa I mentioned, both have less vibration than the stock mirrors but the ESI have even less vibration than the Kewlmetal extensions. Both are an add on but I think the overall fit and look of the ESI extensions is better and flows with the line of the current mirror on the spyder. Now, here is the biggest selling point of all for me on the ESI extensions, I see even less of my hand. I have a lot more road and rearview in this mirror than anything I have tried yet. I can see all the way behind me without the interference of my own hand in my mirror. If you are looking for an excellent product at an excellent price to add to your spyder for safety, this is the way to go. If you have the risers and are having trouble because your hands are in your mirrors, this is the way to go. If you are getting a lot of vibration and movement, I recommend the ESI Up & Out Mirror Extensions. I think Evan hit a home run with these. Here are some photos from today.
View from the seat, you can see the left mirror is the ESI and is ever so slightly higher than the right mirror.
View from the front of the spyder
Kewlmetal right side with hand partly in mirror, better than stock and very good.
ESI Left side, can hardly see hand in mirror, excellent view,
Kewlmetal extension on right
ESI Extension on left
I hope this helps anyone that is trying to make a decision. I really like these ESI Extensions and think they are a great product and addition to your spyder, especially if you have the risers.
