There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Nelson-Rigg CL950 Deluxe Saddlebags

We are busy around here getting things ready to go for Daytona. While all of my gear should fit in the trunk, I figured my wife might need some more space. This type of space is not needed all the time, so I did not really want to go with permanently mounted bags. After reading some threads on this forum, and doing a little research, I decided on an option I felt would meet our needs wonderfully.

Here is the rest of the story.

I ordered these directly from the Nelson-Rigg web site, on Saturday February 13, 2010, and they arrived on Friday, February 19, in this box:

I opened the box to find the saddlebags packaged quite nicely:

The folks at Nelson-Rigg were kind enough to include a 2009 catalog, which has many more products that I might now be interested in:

The packaging also included the instructions, along with a lifetime warranty card:

When you first remove the bags from the packaging, they are squished:
picture.php

This is a top view of the still squished bags and you can see the wide velcro mounting straps:

Each bag also came with its own waterproof cover:

More to follow.....

The first step is to install the stiffener in the bags to make them semi-rigid.

This is one of the stiffeners starting to go into place:

This is the bag with the stiffener fully installed, and it is no longer squishy:

This is the side of the bag that has a neoprene panel to protect the bikes finish:

Each bag also included a shoulder strap for easier carrying:

This is a picture of the bottom which has an Aluminzed Heat Shield to protect the bags from your exhaust pipes:

Still more to follow...

To mount the saddlebags you lift the seat of the Spyder, and pull the large velcro straps across the machine:
picture.php

Each bag also has a couple of auxiliary buckles that can be looped through the foot peg brackets and buckled down for added stability. Here is the right bag mounted on the Spyder:

This is the left bag mounted on the Spyder:

This is what the rear of the Spyder looks like with the saddlebags installed:

This is the right saddlebag with the rain cover installed. This cover should also work well to protect them against road dirt.

We already had the Can-Am Rear Seat and Console Bags, so my wife went ahead and mounted them as well:

And here she is, all loaded down and ready for the trip to Daytona in a couple of weeks:

Overall we are very happy with the bags at this point. We went for a decent ride today, and the bags stayed in place as they should and worked out very well. If you are thinking about doing something like this, I would recommend these Nelson-Rigg bags without any hesitation. They also have a bunch of other styles to choose from, to include ones with solar panels which really got the attention of the geek in me.

they look great but why solar panels.:dontknow:

The ones they sell with the solar panels come with a bunch of adapters for charging your phone, mp3 player, possibly GPS, and any other small electronic devices like that.

These saddlebags do not have solar panels on them.

I really like the look of those.

Can those bags be mounted a little farther back? I have the passenger foot peg extensions, but I'm not sure if they place the passenger's feet far enough forward to clear the bags. :dontknow:

Yes, they could be mounted a little further back as well. I actually started out mounting them where they were right up against the rear turn signals, and my wife decided to move them forward some. It is her Spyder, and she is going to be the pack mule, so her decisions win out on this issue. :D

Cool! I guess I know my next mod! :D

I was thinking about the CL850 bags, but these look sportier...not as square, but they hold less. I can live with that.

When mounting them further back, do both velcro straps still go under the seat?

Not as secure, but is there a way to mount them with the straps "over" the seat? I only ask because I like a much further back position than what you have shown.

TIA

I've got the CL 1000s and I agree on the quality. I adjusted mine farther to the rear.

I have to admit that I did not show her any other styles. I figured with the trunk, rear seat bag, console bag, and these saddlebags, she should have plenty of storage for her stuff. ;)

Yes, they can still go under the seat. It might be possible to go over the seat as well, but I did not try that. We also have the sport rack with back rest coming in, and the new arm rests from ISCI, so I wanted to make sure these were going to ride under the hand grips and not be in the way of those items. :)

They also sell another large square bag, CL-800, that could sit on the seat. If you get that, then you can run the velcro straps under it and it has buckles for hooking it to the saddlebags. That would definitely keep them from going anywhere.

Here is a direct link to their CL-Luggage series:

Hope that helps.

I bought the NR-950s and while the quality was very good I could not get them far enough back to accomodate a passenger. Even if I relocated the turn signals to move the bags further back the back strap on the bag would have to wrap around the back rest and I thought that looked pretty cheesey. Returned them and bought the R-35s which also have more room.

You have to play with them a bit to bet them to fit with a passenger but it does work. The back of her legs was resting on them but they did not push her feet off the pegs so she was good with it. I have used mine for over 15K miles, no problems.

I happen to Know Dimitric from Neson Rigg.
He is very honest and creates a great product.
Glad you are happy with your purchase:thumbup:

CL950 for sale

I have a pair of Nelson-Riggs CL950 softbags for sale. They are in great shape less a loose velcro tab on the top cover flap. They also include the extension straps (provided by Nelson-R) for mounting over the seat if desired. Also includes the rain covers. I installed the Givi hard bags so I no need for the soft. $60 plus shipping. I'm in california.

CL 1000 vs CL950

Any body know the difference between the Nelson rigg CL 1000 vs the CL 950 As near as i can tell the dimensions are the same. I'm up in the air as to which set i should get. I only ride solo = by popular demand.

Patches, thanks for jumping in and explaining they can be mounted further back to accomodate a passenger. I am not able to check the forum from work, something to do with not wanting to waste your tax dollars and such. :D

I probably should have taken better pictures of the side compartments as well. Each bag is identical, and the middle side pocket has the holders in it like you find in suitcases where you can carry your toiletries and such.

I think any of their bags would be an excellent choice, especially if you are looking for something you will not leave on the Spyder all the time. They are also a much more economical choice than the rigid bags.

As for someone possibly stealing them. If you have the straps mounted under the seat, I think it would be pretty hard to get them out of there without being able to lift the seat. Other than that it would be like anything else you may leave sitting on your Spyder, do so at your own risk. ;)
