There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Crappy oil breather setup!

Well I just finished installing the foam filled oil breather tube that Ken (krb1945) sells and installed the green air filter that NMN sells in both of our Spyders.

There was enough airbox oil in both Spyders that when I pulled the air filter cover off, the oil spilled over the front right corner. I was expecting oil but not that much! BRP, what were you thinking when you designed this setup?

Yuck...mine was dry when I put in the green filter...I guess some are more prone to these issues than others??

yuck

I'm afraid that you may have had too much oil in the reserve tank to being with. I have be running with the reserve tank at the half way point and had very little oil in the air box. I recently change to ken's vent tube and changed to the green filter. So far no oil in the air box.

How many miles do you have one them, to get this kind of blow-by oil?

Thanks

I have heard and read that most of the oil in the airbox comes from overfilled oil tanks. If you have not, it may be a good idea to check your oil tank level as per the manual. You can find out more about how to check it by following the link below. I recently checked my oil level for the first time since the purchased. It appears the dealer/factory had too much oil in the oil tank (my guess is the dealer did this). I've not checked my airbox yet.

If you have too much oil in the tank, that may be a result of the inordinate amount of oil in the airbox. As I understand it, with this Rotax engine, everyone (with a stock setup) will have some.

If you get a chance to check your oil, please feel free to post and update on what the level is.

My oil has been at various levels in the past 2 years....it's been over the full mark, under add, sometimes not even touching the dip stick.:opps: I have yet to to even bother looking in the airbox with over 10,000 k's. :dontknow:

In my humble opinion every Spyder is put together just a little different.
My Spyder blew oil into the air box at about 1 or 2 thousand miles. I put foam in the tube i now have over 10 thousand miles with no oil in the air box. When i change my oil and filter i use exactly 4 quarts.

In the first year of operation I did have some oil leaking out of the drain hole on the right side of the airbox. That stopped completely in the second year. I guess the rings have fully seated since then.

7880 on mine and 2380 on my wifes. I am very aware of the issue with overfilling the Spyder with oil and have closely monitored it. Neither one was ever overfilled. We both drive conservatively as far as limiting the rpms. Maybe "lugging" causes excessive blow-by? On second thought, that can't be because Lamonster had the same issue and I know for a fact he would never allow his Spyder to "lug"!:dontknow:

I was shocked at the amount of oil in mine and never expected to find as much if not more in my wifes!

I highly recommend everyone check their Spyder for this issue.

boborgera is correct ...

each one of these machines is a little different. I agree with him that lugging or high revving makes no difference in the blow by. I shouldn't admit it here but I occasionally run low rpm's and low speed because I just want to putt through the countryside. Other times I run the heck out of it... 8000 r's in 2nd, 3rd and 4th for testing purposes and just to feel the surge of power.

With exactly 4 qts of oil after draining every drop that will fall out I have experienced no oil in the air box.

I've only seen one engine that had blow by using the filter cc vent tube and I believe that unit had a faulty engine. Don't know if it was a broken ring or what but it seemed to be putting excessive pressure in the crankcase which would force oil up the tube. /Ken
