2014 RT Limited overheating - Gauge pegging out! Any ideas?

My wife's 2014 RT Limited overheated the other day. 21000 miles problem free until now. Started the bike and pulled it out of the garage for her. Let it idle for 10 minutes or so. She went to leave and before she made it 200 yards down the road, it over-heated - the gauge pegged out.

The fan still kicks on and runs like it should. I haven't had time to look at it, but just went out to garage, started it, and it did the same thing. Idle it for 3-5 mins, then rev it up a couple times and the fan kicks on; then let it run at 3k RPM for like 2 min and the gauge pegs out. Any ideas???

Are you sure it's actually over-heating, and not just a dodgy gauge??

What other symptoms are you seeing when the gauge pegs out? And what is the coolant level in the over-flow reservoir, both when it's cold/after being sitting over-night, and once the gauge pegs out??
