To Paint or not to Paint...that is the Question

I wanted to change my red panels to the pearlized white, does it pay just to have them painted, or purchase new panels from BRP?
Are the new BRP panels solid white all the way through, or painted over the base color of the plastic?

I know painting is less expensive, put does painting over the red create any problems for achieving the luster of the pearl white?

I'm also considering doing the same. A good paint shop shouldn't have any problem getting the pearl to come out right. The should be able to lay down a base coat to cover the red completely before doing the final coat of pearl.

Are you going to have only the red panels painted or all panels like the RS-S?

The factory panels are painted plastic, to answer your question. This decision may come down to price of each option, and the availability of the factory panels (which may be a while). Your costs will increase over a conventional Spyder paint job or panel replacement if you decide to go with all the panels painted, as on the RS-S, rather than the usual color panels, as on a standard Spyder. If you get it painted, be sure and use a painter that is familiar with the needs for painting plastic parts. He needs to add the correct flex additives to prevent cracking, and he also needs to limit the pearl undercoat and paint coat thicknesses, also to prevent future cracking and crazing.

Yes, just the red, what evers on my 2008 SE5

I'm in the same boat (see sig) and have been for a while. I couldn't decide to paint it pearl white or buy the phantom kit, now the 10's come in pearl white and look very good. There was one at the DC motorcycle show this weekend...looked great.

Nice stuff Roger! I have been looking for a good touch up kit for my truck. The Duplicolor touch up kit fillsthe bill. As far as painting my Spyder, I am good with a spray can but not ready for a prime time paint job especially on plastic.

I was there too...still like my SM5 over the RTs but the RTs are really nice for those who want to tour around the country...

In regards to painting, I would pay for the real thing and not try to cheap out on doing it myself. How much do you really save if the paint is coming off next year anyway?

Here at ISCI we also do custom paint work. Depending on where you are located you can bring your bike into our shop or you can ship the panels to us. We have a mil-spec paint facility on site. I have one bike currently in the paint shop. Perhaps when it is complete I can post a few pictures. We recently painted a red / black spyder orange / blue (Auburn University). I am sure I have a few pictures of this bike. I will look for them and post if anyone is interested.

Spyder paint

I was curious what price quotes people received for simple paint schemes and for those that contain basic airbrush work. Just trying to find out generally what is reasonable.

You guys never cease to amaze me!!! I want my red panels painted a different color. I've been thinking either the new Quantum Blue or the metallic amethyst color that comes on the Chevy HHR.
