• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Anyone in the GA/TN/AL area with BUDS Megatech who can disable DESS on my 2009 GS??

Anyone in the GA/TN/AL area who can disable DESS on my 09 Spyder GS. Apparently, I just need BUDS with a Megatech license. Thank you.

I could be wrong, and will gladly stand corrected if that's the case, but I'm not sure that the pre-2014 Spyders work that ^^ way... :rolleyes:

The early Spyders have a somewhat different DESS to the 2014 & on Spyders, one that didn't have anywhere near the same problems as the later models, and they need a Red Master Key to program any appropriately chipped key to suit. IIRC, you could have up to 4 keys programmed to work with those early DESS units, and if you still have one of those key that works with your DESS, you might even be able to clone it. But if you don't have a key with a working chip, then you'll definitely need the Red Master Key, a valid chipped key that matches the cut in the ignition barrel (said key will NOT be the same as a 2014 key, and so may not be readily available thru a dealer, altho it will not necessarily need to be a key that is already programmed to your Spyder - it's just gotta have the correct sort of chip and it needs to match the keying in the ignition barrel! :oops:) and you'll need someone who knows how to program the keys properly - IIRC it's not really a simple & straightforward process, and it MUST be done properly and completed correctly or it'll eventually fail on you, creating all sorts of issues... :cautious:

So I don't think that BUDS Megatech will really help you all that much - not for a pre-2014 DESS, anyway! Sorry! :cry:

I did a lot of reading on older threads and I believe it can be done. I hope it can anyways. I'm hoping someone is somewhat local and I can pay them to do this.

Just to put a bow on this thread for future reference by anyone else, and because you have two threads going - you’ll have to take No for an answer. Can’t be done. You can replace a DESS. And you can program keys if you satisfy the right conditions. But, BUDS has nothing whatever to do with the old DESS system. You can’t disable DESS with BUDS on systems prior to 2014.

Do you know the part number for the DESS unit on this model? And where is it located on the bike? Thank you

219800070 Good luck finding one!!! I don't know what's going on with yours, but if you want a key, you may stand a better chance having one cut and cloned.

His problem is that he doesn’t even have a working key to act as the source for the cloned key.

Mike gave you the correct part number. Not available. It would benefit you to take steps to be able to do work on Spyders without so much dependence on an Internet forum.

Parts can be researched and ordered on sites like this;

Service manuals can be obtained at an insignificant cost here. It’ll tell you where everything is located;

Looks like that part number is superseded to part number 710002971 which is available

I have a key that turns the ignition. So I just need to order 2 new chip keys, copy the cuts on my current key, order a new DESS unit and program the 2 new keys to it. Right?

I don’t know what’s wrong here. That’s the part number for an ignition switch, not for a DESS module. The DESS module is a separate unit from the switch.

That’s right. IF you can get the module. Make sure you look at MY 2009 parts. Get the manual for the step by step instructions, also. BUDS is not used for that.

BUDS definitely does not apply in this instance, so please see and put any further discussion in 'the other' thread:
