Surprising Price Differences for Spyder oil changes in San Diego!

Hello Spyder Lovers in San Diego,

Recently I bought an out of state Spyder and now have to verify of all things, the engine number by the Highway Patrol which is very difficult to view and must take off three panels to barely access. The owner of Kontiki Motorcycle Alex was great. So I ask if he does oil changes on CanAms and to my surprise he said yes but what was really a surprise was the price compared to dealers.

Their charge was $215.00 includes parts and labor (appointment will be necessary). Much better than $300.00 to $600.00 from quotes I have received locally.

It's a decent price... I just changed my own oil for the 1st time, it cost me around $100 for the oil, filter, metal washers, and O-rings. I have the tools to do it, you may not. Considering, for the supplies and they are probably charging you for 1hr. of labor (even though it really only takes about 30 minutes at most) and they dispose the used oil for you, it's probably worth it. And is a better deal than $300-500 for an oil change, depending on location and dealership.

Sounds like a good price compared to the dealerships.

I just change my own oil using rotella t-6 15w40 and ordering filter and gaskets from lamonster, it keeps my cost down to less than $50 per change unless you have to do the HCM filter and there is no getting around the cost of that... add on another $125.

Did you mean T6 5W-40? That's what I've always used and is the weight Can-Am calls for. I guess they do make a 15W-40 and you can run what you like :)

yes, Rotella has 2 grades in T6, the 5W-40 and 15W-40. i just picked up a bottle for spyder and noticed the 15W

Nope it's the 15w40. I run around here on the highways at higher speeds as well as some of the open back roads, so I wanted to run a little heavier than the 5w40.

If you're still under the BRP warranty, no concerns about running that weight vs what the OM calls for? You're braver than me as far as tempting the BRP warranty gods that's for sure. Looks like yours is a 2020 so maybe out of warranty so then it really doesn't matter too much.

Not under warranty anymore so I'm not worried about it. Other people on this forum have run that weight and have not had any issues. I have one exception of needing to warm up the engine for a few minutes in below 30 deg F temps before driving down the road.

Does your cam chain tensioner get a little noisy on start up with 15w40 on 30° day start-ups?

Since the oil is used for the engine, clutch, and gearbox the 15w40 will likely hold the 40 viscosity better over the life of the oil as the gearbox does the majority of the damage to the viscosity. Just drive conservatively at first then have at it.

If you are talking about a "clicking" type of noise I would say yes.

I would compare it to the noise the lifters make on the LS engine that is in my Silverado. But it isn't there for long and about the same amount of time as the 5w-40.
