• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. DPS roulette

The DPS really isn't necessary for most of us - I've put some miles on my Spyder with the fuse pulled. I've seen so many posts about the issue, that I've added a toggle switch to the circuit. If my system acts up, I'll just turn it off.

My concern - since I have yet to experience the failure - is the problem really with the DPS, or are the brakes kicking in, sensing some other type of stability issue?

Perhaps this really isn't a (or just a) DPS issue? Any thoughts??

This was my theory some months ago. I think BRP is barking up the wrong tree by thinking all the steering problems are due to the DPS, when in reality it is the stability control that is causing part of the problems. It is applying just enough braking force to one of the front wheels to make the vehicle change course and causing the operator to "fight" to recover from the directional change. It only takes a small brake drag to cause this. Similiar to an old car that pulls to the right or left when the brakes are applied during a stop. I am a firm believer that a computers only safe place is on a desk. As more and more computer equipped vehicles age, problems caused by runaway computers are sure to multiply.....traction control...stability control...and every other computer controlled device in the modern automobile will come back and bite us !!

Glad you got home ok! I remember the Skyway Bridge - the OLD one. My folks live down there and I remember being little when we used to go on vacation before they moved down there. That thing was scary! Been on the new one too and that is no place for things to start going haywire. Did you file the report?

from the 26th til jan 2 it ran with no problems.

Jan. 3 the power steering seemed like it was off for the first 10 minutes of ryding. I haven't had a steering issue since Dec. 24. What I didn't want happening was for me to have my Spyder trailered 60 miles away and have them call to say they can't find any problem.

All I want is 2 things:
my :spyder: to be road worthy and for me to be able to take it out of town and ryde it without fear or death or injury due to a malfuntioning Spyder, and, competent service for my :spyder:.
Am I asking too much?

I ended up reminding the service manager of our conference call and he then asked me for my VIN # and he said he'd call me back by the end of the day to let me know if/when they could get the part from BRP.
Anyone wanna bet that he forgets to call me back? I'll call at 5pm today to see if he's called yet.
My confidence is waning on the service aspect of my ryde.
:gaah:

Yep - when mine happened in TN, the tech down there downloaded something into it (I have no idea what it was) and the ride back to CT was uneventful but I was nervous! And then when HDX took it to the dealer nothing happened. When the tech from BRP came to ryde it - nothing happened. But they still replaced the DPS. I haven't ridden it much since because it is now cold and snowy. But I'm not 100% trusting with it come next season - gonna take me a while to gain trust back - especially when we are ryding on the highway somewhere at good speeds.

You are NOT asking too much. You spent good money on something you want to be reliable and SAFE.

I really like my dealer so at least I have that going for me. If I had a dealer like that, I'd go elsewhere but it sounds to me that is the only dealer near you.

Just please be safe - even if you are tooling around town.

Hmmmm, well come Spring I'll see if my Spyder behaves. If not, we might have two Urals in the garage:2thumbs:.

A big plus to the Spyder, I think, is the three wheel stability.

A friend recently recommended a Ural to me if I do not go with a Spyder. Funny you mentioned your Urals. Neat.

cheers.

We looked at one at a dealer's last weekend - they are COOL COOL COOL! I'd have to learn how to ride w/ a hack though. We are thinking of getting one but if I have any more problems, we'll have two of them:thumbup:

Yesterday at 0745 traveling south on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge I was trying to pass a car in the fast lane and the Spyder refused to move to the right lane. After 2-3 attempts of she moved 5 degrees right and suddenly drifts 10-15 degrees to the left. This situation repeats 3-4 times during the next 200 miles. Is time to visit the CAN-AM dealer.

You need more evidence? :gaah: DUH!

The fellow that owns one around here rides it year round, and uses the sidecar primarily for a luggage area; groceries and such. However, he did mention that taking right turns is a little unstable at times, as the side car can lift off the ground.

o, m, g........

1) Doc, I breathe a sigh of relief to hear about your experience on the highway. I've been there and know how ugly that is.

2) I'm stunned to see this post, MagicMan's post and a few others that are resurfacing the DPS issue..

3) I'm stunned, because of the coincidence.
Today my shiny new DPS unit that brought me so much joy for the last 5k+ miles has begun to lock up on me.:sour:

I started feeling it last week, but it was so minor that I dismissed it and hoped it would just go away like a bad dream... Then today it surfaced so hard that's it' clearly F-ed up again.

un-real...

The thing that really steams my shorts is that because of the "updates" I can no longer just pull the fuses without getting a CEL. I know this is a controversial subject, but if I could just disable the darn thing and move on with life, I would be very satisfied. I also wish there was an option to purchase an RT without the DPS as this whole thing just stinks.
:gaah:

Oh yeah and the Ural is a Sweet ride. I cam close to getting one in camo from the good folks up at the north end of Rt8.
The 2 wheel drive is insane in the snow and love the ideal of going off road. Only problem is the 50MPH top speed... I can't take that on the parkway, I'll get splattered like a moth. But, if my commute was strictly city roads, I would love to get one!

That is true. Sidecars are evil! They also handle asymmetrically...different turning left than turning right. They are great fun, but having one that is not set up exactly right will either wear you out, or put you in the hospital. Not for the meek of heart, but great for a real enthusiast. The Spyder is much friendlier!

Yep that is what I was told too about right turns. Plus you can't blast down the highway going 100 mph. But there is a fun factor about it - it is a very cool machine. They have been making them for years and years and there have been no steering issues, there is no computer to screw things up and you can ride it ALL YEAR ROUND in any kind of weather.

We stopped by to see Bill this passed Saturday - I love the guy - he is so cool! Yeah, it's a good dealership. and yup - they can't go fast but imagine all the crazy stuff you could do on one. There is one definitely in our future and I will enjoy the side car but I'm sure I'd want my own at some point. I will give BRP some time to figure this all out but come ryding season if this happens again I don't think I wanna ryde it anymore. I trust my dealer and love him to death and I really think he is a total gear head and can make guestimates moreso than BRP. But his hands are tied with what the mother ship tells him to do. So if there is no answer and this happens again, I have decided to quit and sell it and get something else.

I want to grow old with HDX, and I want to be a grandma someday, not go head on into another car, a pedestrian or a telephone pole.

You need to visit Adventure Sidecar in Oregon and take advantage of their sidecar driver training!
