Dealer saying rear lid shock replacmt not covered by warranty - thoughts?

I need some advice here . I have a 2021 RT Limited that is still under the 2 year warranty. I brought it to the dealer for a variety of warranty issues and one item they said is not covered is the weak shock that is not holding up the rear trunk lid. He wants to charge me for this service . I would think this would be covered. Thoughts?

On another note, he is charge me for new brake pads and rotors because of squeaky brakes, only 5000 miles on the bike

I have a new 2023 Sea To sky RT, and so far do not have the weak strut issue for my rear trunk. I did however order the heavy duty Show Chrome rear trunk strut to have it on hand if and when the OEM Strut/Shock should fail.

Here's how it was explained to me. If you have or had a trunk rack on, it is not covered under any warranty. If you never had the rack, then yes it is. This is not my opinion, that's what two dealers told me.

I think the squeak is on you … my 2016 F3L squeaked and so does my 2020 RTL and the brakes worked fine.

The lid strut is also since you modded it … unfortunate but as many that failed without extra weight who could be surprised about failure with additional weight.

That makes sense. I don't think BRP offers a trunk rack as an option, so adding a rack puts a load on the strut that it was not designed for. That gives BRP an out to not warranty the strut.

That's bull. My friend just had it changed under warranty. Dealers don't like to do warranty work because they don't get the same labor rate from the manufactures.

As with any game where only 1 player knows the rules. They can make it up on the fly and tell you whatever they like. But there is no question that there are much less expensive ways to fix squeaky brakes. You'll be throwing away perfectly good pads with no guarantee that the new ones won't do the same thing.

Rear trunk lid.

Vrider, I have a 2021 Sea to Sky and the rear trunk does not have a strut on the lid. Have they changed the design of the trunk.

What do you suppose is keeping it up?

The strut is only visible on my 2020 RTL by removing the passenger back rest ... you cannot see it from inside the trunk.

Exactly what my dealer told me. Mine was covered. Tom :spyder:

Actually, I did not make any mods on the truck lid - it is stock.

If it's stock, the dealer should be on the hook for the repairs. If you are tired of hearing excuses, a new one should be just over $20 at McMaster-Carr. And there you can choose one that's a little stronger than stock.

My fault ... I read a thread that mentioned having a trunk rack and thought it was from the OP.

In that case if you are still under the 2 year warranty it should be covered. Have you contacted BRP ... if not maybe you should.

On BRP's Can Am Spyder website under accessories you can find a top case rack that goes on RTL's. So if the dealer ordered it and installed it you would think that the shock would be under warranty still. Unless they have a disclaimer on the rack being installed that says it adds too much weight for the top case shock and voids the shock warranty? But what do I know? Top Case Rack - SKU 219400743 - $274.99 - for '23 RTL... but the rack is covered by BRP's warranty.

In that case I don't see how BRP can argue the rack voids the shock warranty, unless they can prove you overloaded it. I just looked at the installation instructions. The top rack is limited to 5 lbs which is deducted from the overall capacity of the trunk. Whether or not a rack is installed the max load in/on the trunk is 20 lbs.
