Which F3 Limited Windshield?

I have a 2017 F3L; I'm now trying out my 4th windshield type, so feel I can speak to a number of points raised here. Of course, it is necessary to first understand that windshields, like seats, tires, etc., are very much a matter of personal preference - what suits one guy is terrible for the next. Also, my comments are somewhat conditioned by the fact that the Spyder is the first of my 3 or 4 previous bikes even to have a windshield - so I start from a background of having had to tolerate (and become used to) wind, bugs, rain, hail in my face. That said, here goes:

We (wife and I) began with the short stock shield. I wasn't that bothered, but she was getting buffeted, and I wanted to help her out. We switched to an F4 23" tinted, no vent. Very quiet, calm, pleasant ride; what Don says about his product is very correct. It is well designed and highly effective. I'm 5'10", about 29" inseam, ride my F3L with stock bars and floorboards in position 4. We began with the stock seat but switched to an Ultimate - comparatively, this raised me 1" and lowered my wife about 1-1/2"; caused by difference in one-piece vs. two-piece seating. Seat change didn't seem to affect our experience with the F4 Shield. Biggest drawback was that I could no longer use the expensive BRP cover which was too narrow to fit over the F4 shield (really designed to custom fit the Tall Boy). Also, having hauled the bike to FL for winter riding, the climate was hotter and I wanted more airflow. A third (personal) reason for switching from the F4 23" tinted was that the top of the shield (for me) was right at eye level, and I was getting two different "looks" when going down the road - my vision kept jumping back and forth from clear to tinted to clear, etc. If choosing (for myself) again, I would go with a 21" clear, probably vented. I like to look over a shield, not through, and believe 21" would have worked better for both wife and I; we ride two-up about 80% of the time.

I went from the F4 to a Tall Boy. Really liked the looks of it on the Spyder; aesthetically, it compliments the bike a bit better than the larger F4. Ride-wise, it is much more effective than the short stock shield. Not near as quiet as the F4, nor as calm, but very decent at moving air up and over rider and passenger. Not bad; however, having heard great comments about the X-creen "Tour" add-on deflector which attaches to the top of your windshield, I decided to try one, if only just to see what it might do. You can get these things for about $130 or so, and in either a 'bolt-on' (permanent) or a 'clamp-on' (removable) version; I'm using the latter. I decided to try this out on the short stock shield first. It's pretty effective. It's breezy - great for me in the warmer FL air, where I do ride more solo. The wife is also satisfied so far; no serious buffeting. Very adjustable; you can change the airflow patterns to suit your likes or needs. Very solid at high speed too. We just trailered the Spyder back north on the Interstate. I didn't even bother to take the X-creen off, just flattened it. We drove at full limits all the way, no problems, even in big truck turbulence.

I was going to go further and try the X-creen mount on the Tall Boy, just to compare. My thinking is that it will probably result in even less breeze or noise. I suspect that it will move air even higher and wider than when mounted on the short stock shield. However, if I decide I don't need it, I'll probably have a nice, barely used Tall Boy for sale.

Lamonster has a fairly recent windshield for the F3L that seems to be getting good reports; it's something I have thought about trying, too, in my search for the ideal. And, there are other makes and choices (CalSci, Madstad, etc.) that haven't been tried by me or mentioned by others here yet.

Most of us are individually fussy about what we like, and what we can/will tolerate. Just remember that the above is based upon my personal reactions/preferences. What my head and my butt prefer may not suit yours; some others may even suggest my head is in my butt for even reaching these conclusions ....... now back to you.

Thanks Bushrat, very informative. My F3ST is almost done & I got a really good deal on a Tall Boy so I’m going to try that first. The F3L I test drove a month ago had one on it & it was great, however it did have stock bars and floorboard positions where mine has short reach & #4 pegs. It does look the best out of all the taller ones out there (haven’t seen the lamonster one in person yet to be able to judge it). I tried about 8 different taller shields on my F3 & nothing worked for me, so I ran the route 129. It only took wind off my chest but at least the wind on my helmet was clean air. However that still got tiring after a couple hundred miles. I’m also looking for a set of stock black windshield brackets if you know anyone looking to get rid of theirs. I’ll keep you updated on my experiences with the tall boy when I get it (May 17th).

Hi stebrock, "the wind hits me at the top of my head" does that mean there's still some buffeting?

Just got my new F3L SS 2022 and I get some buffeting, light to medium. I use to rode a F3S SS with the Route 129 without any buffeting.

I'm 5'11'.

:oldpost: . stebrock's post in this thread was waaaayyy back in April 2019 Donni - it always pays to check the start date and the date of the last few posts in any thread you want to reply to, as well as checking the date of any post in the thread that you might want to directly reply to as you've done here, cos if they're old/ish (like this one :p ) you might not get an answer!

In this case, you might be lucky, cos stebrock is still around & active on the Forum, so he might check in... there again, he may not be subscribed to this thread any longer so he may not know you've asked him a question, so it might pay to send him a Private Message - if you don't already know how to do this, just click on his username & select Private Message from the drop down list, then put in a Msg subject & type your question into the appropriate field when the PM page comes up, before submitting it. Then over the next few days or a week or so, watch the Notifications box up the top right of your screen & click on it when it starts flashing Red at you to tell you there's a msg waiting in your Inbox. If you want to Reply to his return Private Message, you don't really need to quote back everything he just sent you (unless it's necessary for your reply to make sense, but I reckon he'll know what he sent you! ;) ) so you can delete everything contained within the 'QUOTE' delimiters at the start & Finish of the text in the Reply field & then type in your response.

Drop me or any of the other Mods a PM if you have any hassles (our usernames show up as Green). Good Luck!

I have a F4 23 inch non vented with the wings, love it. Wife hasn’t been on it yet so don’t know about the buffeting but I can tell you the stock windshield on the F3 Limited is crap! She got hammered with the buffeting so bad she wouldn’t get on it anymore. So I’m hoping my grand investment will take care of her issues. Now I have to come up with some covers that fit it; stock cover and half cover do fit, but not the way I would like them to!

F4 Windshield sounds great. On a side note, my wife's 2019 F3-T has the Tall Boy Touring windshield. Bought it used and we are finding the top edge of the windshield is right in her line of sight. Needs to slouch to see through it. Want to get her a new one, unfortunately, the mounting brackets for this windshield have bolts that are 5 3/8 inch center to center. The original equipment brackets are 3 1/2 inches center to center. Any windshield we consider will not work on this. Does anyone know where a good place to get them might be - without paying the $115 per bracket price?

As mentioned in the quote above yours valles, it ALWAYS pays to check the dates, cos this thread is now almost 18 months older than when I last posted in it, let alone any of the Original Poster's?!

That said, if the windscreen you currently have fits and works apart from the height, why get a new windscreen?? Why not just cut an inch or two off the top of the screen you have if it's too tall; or if it's too short, why not just add a Laminar Lip or similar 'Extension flip' to the top?? :dontknow: Either way will be a lot easier, likely significantly cheaper, and have none of those bracket issues either...

How bout your tall boy. I think shipping to East Tennessee 37601 expensive. If not sold how much. Tinted? Vent? I have a 2017 F3-SE6 Limited. Moved from a Goldwing and too much wind with the mickey mouse stock windshield. Maybe back to the wing...have not registered the bike yet.

Give the Can Am a chance. You have to put some miles in the saddle to feel comfortable and enjoy. One of my riding buddies had ridden Goldwings forever and he told me over the weekend while we were on a day ride that he would not trade his 2020 RT Limited for 2 new Goldwings if he had to keep them and not be able to sell them.

Same thing I said to valles applies to you Leaping, it ALWAYS pays to check the dates of any post you are planning on replying to before you post... ;)

That post you quoted above was posted waaaayyy back in APRIL 2019!! So I strongly suspect that one way or another, Tnkrtoy has moved on juuust a little from what he posted waaaay back then...

A little late to post on this. On my '20 F3S L, I have a Mastad FST-20. It is one of the best windshields on any of the 2 or 3 wheeled vehicles I have had. Even adjustable, quiet, and no buffeting.
