2021 Windscreen Glare

My friend has a 2021 RT. I drove it to warranty while he was injured. I let early, before sun up to get to the dealer at opening time.

As I cruised up the highway, I found there was this odd distracting reflection, almost like a heads up display on the windscreen. I tried a multitude of tests to try and determine the cause. Helmet with visor at different angles. Moved my hand about trying to find the source. Even tried flipping the visor up. Ultimately, it seems the shiny black plastic trim panel on the black glare shield is the culprit. Not exactly sure how it was reflecting onto the windscreen, but it was.

My friend purchased a Hopnel bag to go there.

Just curious if others have seen this also.

You did not say how tall his windshield is. I never look through a windshield, always over it. So what's on the w/s never bothers me. Another reason to look over and not through.

Entirely stock oem 2021 RT windscreen. The windscreen height was set low enough so I was looking over it. Actually tried various heights to see if the issue would improve. Essentailly the windscreen raised and lowered while the reflected image remained.

The glare onto the windscreen was enough that even though looking over the windscreen, it was apparent in your lower peripheral vision and distracting.

I bought a 2021 Spyder RTL in early August of this year. I have not experienced what you describe here. After experimenting with various windscreen height settings, I’ve come to the conclusion the lowest position works best for me in most all conditions. Occasionally I’ll ride to our interchange on I-75 just under a mile from our driveway w/o a helmet for fuel or refresco as there are several establishments that cater to the motoring public (filling stations & the like, burger doodles, etc.) and I find riding w/o a helmet (very infrequent) that I’ll rise the height of the windscreen so as to look through it instead of over it, just to have a little more protection from the elements. FWIW, the speed limit between my driveway and the interchange is 45 MPH

Again, ive yet to experience what you describe here. I’ve never seen what you describe. If it helps, my body’s height is 6’1”. I wear/require tall sizing in my shirts, jackets, just to give you an idea of what the ergonomics are like for me sitting on my Spyder

I see the same on our '21 RTL. Learning to just live with it right now, but considering a rough black leather covering (from scrap bin at Muddy Pond leather shop) if it becomes an issue.

At least I am not crazy and seeing things. My buddies Spyder is the same Chalk Limited as yours. He may not have the heated seats. A Hopnel dash bag is what he got to place over that shiny plastic panel.

Not a 21 but on my 14 I had the same experience, if I wore a white or light colored " T " shirt, darker colors eliminated the problem. .... of course when it was cooler I would wear a jacket, and all mine are darker colored ......( the angle of the windshields may be different ) .... I thought I had seen something like that, PMK, but only once or twice, so I never isolated the cause. Thanks for your post as I now know what it may have been. Like your friend, I am going to order the Hopnel bag to put up there…….good to know it will address more that just extra storage. BONUS :2thumbs:

Quick update. Friends Spyder was at my house yesterday so I could install his BajaRon front shock preload collars.

When I finished the preload collars, I sat on his 2021. Windscreen was in the lowest setting. He has his new Hopnel dash bag installed now. For a quick test, I simply placed my hand in the area of the super shiny plastic panel, now occupied by the Hopnel bag. Even in bright daylight, the backside of my hand was clearly reflected onto the windscreen.

As I mentioned previously, the reflection projects and gives the appearance of a heads up display. I did not remove his new Hopnel bag to test further. Might be something to consider if this becomes or is an issue for others.

That’s just weird.
The only reflection I have gotten was from wearing an open-faced summer helmet which has a very dark tinted full face shield on it and me wearing a very light blue shirt.. and only since the sun has taken a lower pitch in the sky.
It hasn’t done this all summer long… just when the sun position in the sky has changed.
When I changed to my full-face modular helmet for winter riding there is no glare while wearing the same light shirt.

Just a thought, PMK do you happen to wear glasses? Just wondering if a tint or coating on the lenses might play a role in this.

No glasses worn while this has happened. Yesterday, bike was in driveway, not even running.
Pretty much, it must be some kind of refraction creating a reflection on the windscreen.
I have seen on aircraft windows that are also plastic, similar things occur. On those, the reflection was not on the plastics near side, but rather reflected off the internal surface of the far side. Regardless, whatever it is, his Hopnel bag seems to have been a good solution.
