• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Encouraging news and pics of spyder guts

In the 8th pic it looks like a corner of that star shaped part is missing??

I agree... this one.

i dont know what it is but it doesnt look like its on the inside of the engine

That is the gear selector. Your gear shift lever moves against the pins for gear up, gear down. I'd think the "Missing" part is there on purpose. If I had to guess I'd say that is neutral.

And that assembly is inside the case of the engine.

I'm gonna disagree with you there, Ron. The selector rests in the "valleys" which are still intact. That "peak" that appears to be missing really does nothing other than separate gear positions... however, Brian did mention that they found a piece of unknown metal when they broke the engine apart.

If you increase the magnification of the pic, it sure looks like a rough, broken surface around the edge of the missing "peak". At a minimum, it sure looks different from the other finished edges on the same piece.

JMHO.

Brian says you are right Ron. That is where neutral is. Also, the piece of metal found was tiny. Now they are even suspecting it may have been on the rag and not come out of the oil case. We may never know.

Looking at the manual, page232, I would tend to agree with Ron. The index shim (star shaped piece) appears to have 6 deep detents and one shallow one. To me, that's 1-2-3-4-5-R deep and N shallow. If you look at the illustration in the manual, the index lever is in the N position.

Bummer they had to take it down so far. Not sure if it's typical for local shops to do such major tear downs in this day and age? Seems to me it would be better to swap engines using a 'core exchange' setup with BRP's HQ.

They would send the dealer an already rebuilt engine - then yours goes back to BRP to be rebuilt and swapped for another--- and so on.

Would put the rider back on the road sooner.

Then again-- I guess it's good for the local guys to learn this stuff....

Hope you get back on the road soon--- and was glad to hear it wasn't weather-related--- so you can continue your quest to ride year-round in Michigan.

Yeah Dan, it would have been an idea to send me a new engine and get me on the road sooner and then let BRP look over my engine. On the other hand, with Roger taking apart my engine and being in constant touch with BRP and sending them pictures back and forth, I will probably have one of the most knowledgeable spyder service guys out there. I know he went to the very first Spyder School they offered and he has worked with BRP in helping to solve other problems. I have an awful lot of confidence in him. I think I would rather have my engine "rebuilt" by Roger than get a rebuilt engine by someone I didn't know. If they want to send me a new engine to get me back on the road, that would work too. Regardless of what happens, I continue to wait patiently for the time being. As long as I get it back in tip, top riding and working order, I will be happy.
