There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Should I get the recall done?

I’m trying to decided if I should get the recall done #1 or #2. I have had the 09 spyder for 6 months and 3000 miles everything runs great. i ride it every weekend. I’ve never had a problem with the steering, backfiring, gas smell etc. I’m a little nervous about getting the updates after reading some of the posts here. I’m a true believer in “if it’s not broke don’t fix it”. but I would hate to have a steering issue arise, and get blamed for not doing the recall/update. Apparently this has happen to someone else. What’s everyone option on this issue. Do most of you regret getting the recall/updates?? Thanks in advance for the feed back.

I too have the 09. There are THREE updates. I too had reservations and threw a hissy when after #2 my bike was running like crap. However, there is a part that is ordered for some bikes with the third update.

Don't take it in until they can do all three. After #3 bike purrs like a kitten, so does my husbands. (we have two 09's)

I talked in depth to our dealer about it and it turns out that is can be a safety issue if you do not do it.

Call your dealer. Talk to them about the third update.

is the 3rd update also a software upgrade? or is it the ground wire and canisterectomy fix? and are these required for the SM5?

Yeah, now there's a third update???

I've not been ryding much so haven't even gone ahead and had #2 done!!

I'm usually pretty optimistic. But. Just how many updates to the official recall are going to be needed?

It's a difficult question to answer. If you get the updates (and you need to get them all I think) and they work well as they have for most riders then it's a great deal.

Update #1 had about a 40% issue rate (though 90% of problems were due to the purge valve and easily fixed).

The 2nd update seems to have a much lower failure rate though it seems that failures revolve mostly around steering issues.

Don't know anything about a 3rd update so others will have to fill that in.

I have the 1st update (worked brilliantly). Have not gotten the 2nd update.

IMHO your dealer is wrong:

1. First update June 2009 (.fc files for DPS and ECM)
2. Second update Sept 2009 (flash the ECM update 1 plus canister long hose).

Did your dealer read this? http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15233

I got the first update. It contains DPS problem detector software that scrolls some DPS problems on the cluster. It detected a bad DPS unit on mine which was replaced on warrantee. I returned for update number 2 but was told that if I was experiencing no further issues, number 2 is unnecessary. My SE5 has been running well. I believe I will ask for the cannister vent hose though, even if I haven't had any gasoline smells.

Okay. My better half just told me that it wasn't a third. I thought for sure it was. They guy I bought it from is BIG on having his bikes serviced and cared for and I swore it had TWO updates and then we took it in a couple of weeks ago and did another.

It was the second dps update that we went in for.

My bad. Sorry if I caused confusion.:opps:

Here's my thoughts. I picked up my wifes bike it was a left over 08. The dealer did, so they say the first update. The bike runs perfect. I did the relocation of the vent tube myself, out the back of the bike not the front. Being the bike runs perfect with no issues I don't see any reason to screw with it. Until BRP states they have an actual fix for the steering issues no need to see them. Then again what do I know, I do my own service and use Rotella 5w-40 with the SM rating:yikes:

I'm in the same boat. It's 70 miles 1 way to my dealer. I've gotten the 1st update and my Spyder runs great. Don't know what they could do to make it run better except maybe put a Hayabusa motor in it. That AIN'T gonn'a happen.

I'm not against the 2nd update even with the complaints I've heard (heard many more about the 1st update and that went fine).

Just not motivated at this point.

Do It

I had no problems but I had both updates done. I still have no problems. I guess more of us that are happy need to post.

According to BRP, the 2nd Update is OPTIONAL.

" Please note that these updates are not necessary if you have not noticed changes in the performance of your roadster since the DPS safety recall was performed. "

So, if after the 1st update, you are not having any problems, keep riding.

Tom

I'm still trying to figure out what the evap canister vent hose is for then. It must not be important because those who did not get the 2nd update done also did not get this new hose installed. According to my Dealer and BRP I needed both updates and was done at the same time by checking my vin #. But did not need the new vent hose which they checked by vin#. Still haven't gotten an answer from Dealer or BRP about why I didn't need new vent hose:dontknow:. Any body have any clue?

Up to now, my Spyder was running beautifully. Ridding was bliss. Now out of the clear blue sky my Spyder has decided to intermittently run like crap. I have had the first update, but not the second. I have hesitation that could be better described as faltering. Sometimes from a standing stop I have to raise the rpm's to a high level and slip the clutch just to get started. Sometimes the faltering occurs with what seems like misfiring. The next morning everything will be completely normal (bliss returns). My experience seems similar to what others have overcome with the second update. I am reluctant to do the second update because I don't want to get the steering disease. I have not had any problems with my steering yet.

I am inclined to suffer with my driveability problems until BRP comes up with a cure for the steering disease. The driveability problems do not seem to be getting progressively worse. However, they are completely unpredictable. I cannot ask the Spyder tech to fix a problem he cannot see. How would he know when the problem was fixed? The problems do not occur when I am anywhere near the dealership. By the time I would get there, the problem would be gone.
