Lost my best friend

smokster

New member
I had to let my best friend (Smokie aka Smokster)of 10 years go yesterday. He has been the most loyal companion I have ever had. He went to many mountain ranges, camping/ hiking trips. He was by my side 24/7. If anyone knows the queensland healer, they are so dedicated to their owners. He was protective, sensitive, quarky and so many other attributes.
He was given 3 months to live and lasted almost 9 1/2 months and ended up dying 3 days after his 10th birthday. I will miss him so very much.

I cannot keep his picture and forum name of Smokster for the reason that it makes me hurt so much. When the time comes and I get a new name, I will let you all know.

For now, I just try for each new day and no my buddy is not in pain and is playing tennis ball somewhere special.

Sorry to be such a mush to all of you, but alot of have been so good to me and have become the best of friends.

Dogs are so awesome, they ask for so little yet give us so much! Sorry for your loss. Why do dogs have such a short lifespan?

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I am sorry to hear of ur loss. One of my dogs was given 6 months to live 3 years ago. We bought a new dog to help ease the pain for my daughter and it's been 3 years we have Two dogs and so far all has been good. Again I am sorry to hear of your loss.

I am sure, like me everyone understands your loss and wish you well for the future. My two four leged companians are everything to me as well and I fully appreciate your feelings, take care and best wishes.

I've been there too and it sucks. I don't even want to think about that with my Ruby (Golden Retriever). Why do dogs live short lives but mean people seem to live forever?

Grieving the loss of a great dog takes time. While there's no substitute for such a mutt (which you could swear had the soul of a very old human, don't get me started on reincarnation) I've found the best solution is to distract yourself by taking on a pain-in-the-butt puppy which will amuse you tirelessly with peeing, pooping, chewing, barking, crying and wagging its tail off.

I am so sorry to hear this. I too know how hard it is to loose a "Special Dog" like your Smokster.

Sorry for your loss. :(

That's not mush! I would be totally devastated if something happened to my dog...the pic you see as my avatar is him...my PWD!

When they say a dog is a man's best friend, it's said for a reason. I feel for you and hope you can recover and find love sometime down the road with another doggie!

Best wishes...

Sorry for your tremendous loss. I lost my Rotty on July 4th. Still doesn't feel right coming home each day.

I really feel for you - brings tears to my eyes as it brings back memories of similar losses. The one thing that gets me thru the tough times is knowing that I gave my dog a great life - and did what was right for him in the end - as hard as it was.

People that are not 'real' dog people may not be able to understand the connection that a human can have with a dog when they are with them basically 24/7 - like my last one was. There is a bond beyond anything I've ever had in my life - and with time I will go down that path again - but it's hard to think of another the same - or the future pain of losing another best friend.

As odd as it sounds - and many won't get this - losing my dog was harder on me than losing my father - who was also a great friend and mentor.

Take whatever time you need to mourn before jumping into another dog. You are in my thoughts during this most difficult time.

A friend sent this to me during my time of loss:

It came to me that every time I lose a dog
they take a piece of my heart with them.

And every new dog who comes into my life,
gifts me with a piece of their heart.

If I live long enough, all parts of my heart will
be dog, and I will become as generous
and loving as they are.

My thoughts are with you, man. A pet's love and loyalty are unconditional. All they want in return is food, water, and some attention. Smokester is with Blazer...they'll have a BLAST!

I lost two Golden retrievers. The first, Blazer, was a horror story. We think he had his head caved in by a dognapper with a 2x4. Vet said it was definitely not a car but something with a sharp edge. A chocolate lab down the road had the same thing happen. And two huskies and a pit bull disappeared that weekend. Blazer fought for 3 months to stay alive and I didn't have the guts to put him down. Finally lost his valiant battle and was buried by a dogwood behind the house

The Queensland Healer is a great dog. Very loyal and energetic.

I've had some excellent dogs over the years and they are very special friends.

You can get another dog that becomes just as special but you can never replace the one that has gone.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. This is why I won't have anymore dogs, I had to put the last two down and it hurt for a long time. It's all about coons for me now. They come and go as they please and yet they still give me a lot of joy, just not the friendship a good dog can give.

a relationship unlike anything else

Dogs make us Human.

Dogs have the ability to reflect both the best and worse of ourselves without judgement. In the end, for those of use who learn to love and appreciate them; those wonderful qualities that that we see in them are us. For so little, they make us much better humans.

It is a gift to treasure, to be thankful for, and proud of - every day.
