There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. ridiculous maintenance charges

I have a question:
Why does synthetic oil last 6,000 miles in a car and only 3,000 - 4,000 in a GS 998?
Thanks

WELLLLLLL NOW THAT YOU MENTION IT

I have a question:

Because Cars don't Also use the same engine oil in the Transmission ..... the transmission causes the oil to Shear much quicker than the engine alone ever will ......... this means the oil Viscosity drops below a safe number ..... hope this helps ...... Mike

I have had several Harley's and even they don't cost as much to service
as the Spyders, most dealers in this area charge $125 hr. +parts

Ever owned a Harley ??

What line of work are (or were) you in ? And how much do you "charge" for your services ??

Shop around; find another shop to do the work.
Some independents have enough experience to do the basic stuff......and often charge less.

Synthetic oil lasts MUCH MUCH MUCH longer than that, ask your friendly AMSOIL dealer
I currently have a shop truck with Synthetic oil that has been in it for 2 years, I change the filter
every 3500 miles and add a quart of oil. the oil is clean I have it tested every 6 months.
I also have (Had) a GoldWing with well over 40K on the same oil and did the same as the truck above
change filters and add oil.

2 filters. Oil and transmission

We were discussing the maintenance costs of new spyders. This would indicate a 1330 engine which only gets one filter changed during an oil change but yes, 2 filters for an SE 998, plus 2 orings and 2 crush washers.

Just did my oil change purchasing everything as always from Ron. $80.00.

It is a wonderful thing when you are able to do the mechanical stuff on these. Starting with just the Tupperware, it seems way above my pay grade. And...I used to do all the oil changes in my autos and two wheeled motorcycles.

Oil analysis of even the almighty amsoil have shown it does not last past 5k in the 1330 Ace engine. Trans and clutch shear it too badly. Rotella fairs pretty well being designed for high shear in high pressure diesel injection systems and turbos but still not past 5k in the Ace. In fairness, my diesel does use 14 qts for an oil change so the shear is spread out a bit further.

service

there is big diff between oil change and service so do it your selfers are im sure not going thru the extensive list of things that get checked during a service just my 2 cents

First the list is not that long and takes less than 10 minutes to complete. Second, many dealers don't do them.

Effect on Warrantee by doing own maint.

Having my Spyder for only a couple of weeks and 1300 miles. (purchased used). A general question about doing your own maintenance. Aside from time consuming removal of all panels. How will doing your own maintenance effect the factory or B.E.S.T warrentee. Saving a few bucks to chance warrentee voiding is taking a chance.

I know one time I had a 3rd party auto warrentee and if you don't have iron clad proof claims are rejected.Never purchased 3rd party warrantees and have all work done at dealer until warrantee is up.

First 3,000 Mile Service Costs Near Alabama - BRP Certified Dealers

I have called 4 of the dealerships near me (North Alabama) for the Initial 3,000 mile service. High was $525 from a Platinum dealership somewhere in middle TN, and low was $400 from a Gold dealership near Nashville, TN. :yikes::gaah:. I don't feel comfortable doing the 3,000 mile Initial Break In Service by myself, or through an Independent shop because I want the full check out and the BUDS system scan by a BRP Certified Dealer. Later services I may do myself.

I'll keep calling, but I think they are all about the same down here. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Holy :cus:! Prices that high require additional explanation from the stealership. 1. What is their hourly labor rate? 2. How long do they take to do the 3K maintenance? 3. With the 3K maintenance item list from your operator's guide in hand, what do they do as part of the 3K scheduled maintenance? It better be at least as complete as what's in the operators guide. 4. If they take longer than two hours, why? 5. When the math doesn't come out, why? Ask them to explain it.

This is exactly why I DON'T take my Spyder to any dealer ....unless it's an emergency or under warranty ....JMHO .. Mike

No doubt! But with a brand new trike and no knowledge of which local independent shops have the skill (and a BUDS system?), I'm sort of at their mercy for this initial break-in service. I'll be doing more research and buying some additional tools so I am not trapped by this at the second service around 12,300 miles. I'm assuming that only Certified Dealers get the BUDS diagnostic system?

No, any shop, even independents can licence BUDS. You will find most of the shops that do the Laser Alignments have a licence in order to do that work. There are a number of good independant Spyder shops around the country.
