My Gold Plug Review......

So I swapped out both drain plugs (SE5) for the gold plugs last year mainly because BRP engineers are basically nonmechanical idiots when designing a drain plug with either a allen or torx head that is just begging to be stripped out the more you remove and install them.

Well yeaterday was the first oil change removing them and this is my experience.

I noticed what Finless Bob noticed as well is that the magnet is very strong but it also makes the entire plug magnetic, which isnt that big of a deal.....or so I thought. I only had a few metal particles, and they were areound the magnet and not anywhere near the threads of the plug.

But here is my issue with these plugs, and will be researching to find a better replacement next time.

When you remove the plug from the oil sump, the plug has to fall down through the opening in the fame piece. Well this is where it got interesting, when the plug was removed and me thinking it would drop out and away.................I WAS WRONG.

What happened was that since the magnet has basically made the whole plug magnetic, as the plug was dropping away, the plug actually got stuck on the outside of the drain hole and by now the oil was coming out and hitting the side of the plug and making a little bit of a mess because the oil was hitting the side of the oil plug.

The Engine oil plug came out without issue, I have the lower pans removed so it was basically a straight out.

Just wanted to give a quick review for those that have them or are thinking about them.

I had the Dimple plugs in my SE5 and don't recall this problem.

Just get the plug ALMOST all the way out, and finish it up with your fingers. :thumbup:
You can pluck it out of the way; before the BIG messes happen!

The only way to not have this happen, is to NOT have a magnetic plug... :shocked:

Tried that, but the oil is pretty HOT!!!

I hardly think the BRP engineers are "nonmechanical idiots".... personally, i think they did a terrific job design ALL the variations of these vehicles... i would suggest that it comes down to the LOWEST BIDDER, and the purchasing/finance dept personell are behind that decision... I too found the OEM drain-plugs to be less than acceptable, and replaced them on the 1st oil change with the GOLD PLUGS which are an exceptional product...

Before switching - remember there were some failures with the thinner sidewalls of the DIMPLE brand ..... Also Stainless Steel is very poor as far as MAGNETISM is concerned , I doubt the PLUG itself has become Magnetized ( I have been researching MAGNETS for my RT MIRROR PROJECT ) .. annnnnnnnnd if you put a piece of paper in the socket before you TAP it onto the PLUG it will hold the plug when you re-move it ............. jmho ....... There was a person much late last year that took a piece of plastic tubing with the inside diameter of the socket. He slipped it over the plug and then removed the oil plug. This did two things. One is it let the oil drain down the tube and guided the socket set up on to the plug. Just another idea. :bowdown::bowdown:

Im all too familiar with the lowest bidder claim in my past line of work. But if you let that drive the final decision, then there are shortcomings in some areas. I'll stand by the idiot claim, just look at the airbox alone. If you can explain to this public educated guy just the reason for the shape, fitting, and volume size to justify what, performance?

I did see the failures. It very well could be just how the plug is put together that basically thansfers the magnetic properties through the core of the plug and makes the sides of the plug become magnetic as well.

Here's the thing....

the engine plug is in the aluminum case and the oil one is in a metal tank. so the engine plug comes out easy the other jumps to the metal parts. I pull all the panels and avoid this problem and don't change the oil when it is to hot on the body extremities....I have the dimple and they work great but pricy.

Hot oil

I wear a pair of cotton work gloves with the nitrile gloves over them. Fear no hot oil! Brilliantly, it only took a few dozen oil changes to come up with this; works perfectly! Joe

To bad , I got mine in about 10 days ....... from what others have reported here the Internal sidewall thickness of the thread area on the GOLD PLUGS has measured thicker than the DIMPLE Brand........ This could be the reason some of the Dimples have failed ........ Mike :thumbup:

When I go on the gold plug site it wont let me look up the plug. I click motorcycle put in 2010 and that's it , it won't go any further.:banghead:
