• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

How to Use BaseCamp an Instructional Guide

I spent a lot of time with Garmin tech support and the tech said there are different ways to get the route to you device. He said the easiest and most dependable way is to "not use the send to device button". He said to simply drag the route from the bottom left directly to the root of the device at the top. Since it have started doing this - every-time I boot up the device I get "the you have new data - do you want to import it"

Works every time

You can also drag it the folder where Garmin would put it and use the Import Route Function as well, like Garmin said.

Thanks for the BaseCamp link

Thanks for the link, Willie. I downloaded the PDF and will go through it. I've used BaseCamp for several years and am kind of OK with the things I am capable of doing. I always used MapSource but it quit working on my computer. I got a lot of help from Garmin support and we finally got it to work. The next day it was abending so I learned to "love" BaseCamp. I do in fact love the lifetime maps.

Check Compatability

You should check with Garmin to verify your GPS is compatible with Base Camp. I know that the 665 is not compatible. You might be able to create and download routes but funky things can and will happen at the worst times.

Totally not true. I use Basecamp with my Zumo 665, Nuvi 2797 and two ancient Quests. I would say it works without problems, but then we are talking about Basecamp.

...I use Google Maps and don't have any issues and on my phone I use the IPhone Maps app. What does this program do that others don't?

I use google maps for quick trips and route comparisons. I like basecamp because I like to maintain a library of ride ideas from magazines like Roadrunner and Ride Texas and I also use it for long term planning. When we did our 48 state trip the planning process was over a three year period. We are currently planning a trip combining the Lincoln Highway and US 50 from coast to coast. Basecamp allows me to set up waypoints for locations we want to see along the way and if for some reason I scrub a route to start over, the waypoints are still available. Fairly easy to cut sections out and paste sections in as well. The program does have a learning curve, but it is, IMO, more robust as a planning tool than google or some of the others.

I have watched many videos on how to route on basecamp and most are hard to follow. I found this guy Jim Emmons is easy to understand for me. I guess its because we are both from Texas. I subscribed to his channel, he does not have many videos but the ones on basecamp are pretty good.

I'll check this out. Thanks.

Me also........

First let me say that I hate clicking on links, I'd rather just see the information posted so I haven't clicked your link. What is the mystery in planning routes? I don't understand, I use Google Maps and don't have any issues and on my phone I use the IPhone Maps app. What does this program do that others don't?

I also use Google Maps on my cell phone and have it blue toothed to my Sena head set to hear the directions. Super simple and works very well. The only downside I've found is Google Maps running constantly sucks the life out of the phone's battery, so I just hook up to 12v to keep it running. I don't always use the app because I generally know where I'm going. Mainly use it in congested areas with heavy traffic.

I've tried to use BaseCamp. However it only installs to the C drive. I've tried numerous ways to install it to other of my LARGER drives to no avail.:gaah:
No help from Garmin support. I've used Garmin's devices since the first Street Pilot and would love to utilize BaseCamp. It seems like more and more some software
developers are of the opinion 'use it the way we wrote it and be happy with all the new bells and whistles or forget about it'.
I've given up and use my GPS as a moving map only. Google Maps to start then folded real paper maps and using your 'biological memory storage unit' is a lot more fun.
And you don't have to save, press a button, drag a waypoint or hear 'Recalculating" if you want to change where you are headed.:roflblack:

end of rant:p

I had problems with mine also ,and garmin suport found mine was loaded to C drive .They sent me instructions on how to get it on F drive ,now i get my maps as they should be .

I have found the Garmin technical support folks very helpful when I've run into BaseCamp problems that stump me or appear not to do what I want them to do.

Is this link only for Windows?

I've tried to access it in five different browsers on my iMac and each of them give me a "File Not Found" page.

My son gave up on BaseCamp on his Mac but was not for failure to find the program. I've seen the Mace version once and it looked substantially different from my Windows version. Suggest you call Garmin and ask for help; that's what they pay the tech for.
