• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Strange issue - fast idle and difficult 1st/Reverse gear selection?

My wife owns a 2011 RT Limited. We were out riding on Sunday and the bike exhibited a very strange issue and hoping to get some guidance. The first symptom was that the bike was idling REAL high. So high that from a stop she would let off the brake and the bike would lurch forward. When we got home, she pulled into the driveway and the bike would not go into reverse. She shut it off. After sitting for a few minutes I restarted it. It would start fine but would still not go into reverse. When I would shift it into 1st gear and try and move it forward the bike would cut off. When trying to restart it again the check engine light came on and the (R)everse and (N)eutral lamps on the dash alternated flashing. She does have one head lamp out but I can't see how that would cause these symptoms. Thoughts anyone?

It sounds like you might have more than one issue.
I would check the status of the two hoses going into the throttle bodies. A cracked hose would explain the high idle.


From the operator's Guide:
N + R flashing quickly Undetermined gear position Stop vehicle and allow to reach neutral

The gear box position sensor is reporting that it is not in gear properly.
This could be real or a sensor problem.

When the Spyder is acting up press MODE-SET-TURN SIGNAL CANCEL all at once
A blank screen indicates no error codes or there may be some displayed.
 
My 2011 did that when the oil was too low

It would have to be really, really, really low to have and effect on shifting. It would have to be low enough to cause low oil pressure. The oil tank is just a reservoir. If there is enough to hold oil pressure, there is enough to function. That said, low oil is still not a good idea.
 
Did the idle return to normal? If not, shifting is difficult or impossible. Check the code. You might have a throttle body issue where the butterfly valve is not returning all the way back to idle. What you experienced sounds a lot like what happened to me. A good cleaning of the TB may be needed.
 
Please don't shoot the village idiot...:banghead: Where do I find the throttle body on one of these machines? I'm no mechanic but once you point me in the right direction, I can usually wrench my way around without messing things up too badly.

I respectfully disagree (from experience)!

My 998 engine loved oil. About every 700-800 miles 'she' would like about 4 ounces. If I ignored and allowed it to go a few more miles, she literally would do exactly what OP is stating... at that point it would take 6-8 ounces added oil to make "her" a happy camper and want to shift and perform like the fine machine she was. And just a gentle reminder... please always check the oil level as written in manual... or you will not get an accurate read. And as a side note... dang, another feature of the 1330 engine that I LOVE.... no oil consumption between changes.... sweeeeeeeet. Happy Ryding... packing for heading out on 3-week adventure to the Badlands and other places on the map!!! (Yes, I always carry extra oil!!!) :yes: :yes:

I looked up on YouTube on how to access the throttle body on an RT.... Do you really have to pull off all the front tupperware just to access those two rubber hoses that folks are telling me to check?

The RT is a puzzle and the first piece of the puzzle is the mirror. You need to start there and remove the panels going down. You need a Torx 30 and a flat tip screw driver to remove push pins

No it does not. The HCM suction line is higher in the oil tank then the engine oil pump suction line. So the HCM is going to gulp some air and interfere with shifting before it will affect the engine oil pressure. Two different systems. You are correct in that the oil has to be very low to affect shifting. That is 1 to 1.5 quarts below the add line.

Low oil level does not explain high idle revs.
