There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Helmet Buffeting

DrJohn

New member
I have the Blue Ridge Windshield on my F3-S. I get a lot of helmet buffeting above 55 mph. I'm using the Bell Mag 9 helmet. I never rode a bike that didn't have helmet buffeting above 55 mph. But, I'm open to suggestions. Maybe it can be cured...

I measured the Blue Ridge windshield to be 21.5 inches at 47 degrees rake.

lots of options

you'll get a lot of opinions on this, just open up any thread on windshields and you'll find all your options. Both of us resolved it with the x-creen tour (I don't recommend spending the extra money on the the clamp on option). This solution is about $120 depending on where you buy from. Otherwise you're looking at replacing the windshield with a taller one.

This seems like a good idea. But, I would hesitate drilling holes in a $410 windshield. I think the clamp kit is a less risky option.

I'm using an X-Creen on my RT with the very short windshield and it works very well. I do like the clamp-on option because I don't want to put holes in my windshield and want the option to easily take it off.

Best price I could find, and they gave me good service and have a good installation video:

I ordered it from twisted throttle and regret it. First, it said error: my charge was denied. So, tried again. Then, it said error: this is a second transaction. I checked with my bank and have two charges pending from twisted throttle.

A typical issue with helmet buffeting, which is very rarely addressed, is the possibility that the helmet is too big. If the helmet is loose on the head it doesn't take much turbulence to move it around, or much negative pressure to lift it away from your head. This increases the effect and severity of the buffeting quite a bit.

If you can move your helmet around on your head beyond what the flexibility of your skin will allow, (a fraction of an inch) then your helmet is probably too big. You cannot compensate for a too large helmet buy cinching up on the chin strap.

Most people feel that having a helmet on their head is all the protection they need. But the fact is, a helmet that is too large may not give you any real protection at all in an accident.

Drop them a note. Based on my experience, I'm sure they will get it handled for you without a lot of stress. Sometimes the tech isn't perfect for any company.

issues with pictures

I took pictures but they are failing to upload with a red exclamation point, no matter how I try to get them in here (as in-line or attachments). The adjustability with the dogbone is pretty endless. Maybe someone else will get some pictures uploaded. If you do a search on x-creen, I think you'll find some because I know I've seen pictures in the past.

Thanks for trying. I think it is more a matter of angle than height. The blue ridge windshield is raked at 47 degrees and it is straight. On the F3-T, the windshield curls upward at the top. The X-creen can duplicate that upward movement of air like on the F3-T windshield, which is probably like the discontinued Route 66 windshield.

Height is not always the answer. Aerodynamics play a huge part in the wind.

Wind comes in from all different areas of the ride. Not all windshield.

Put deflectors on my RS made a huge difference on wind on got on my head area also.

THINK outside the box. Always not the obvious :hun:

The only real cure is to modify the BR shield... Carefully remove it and lay it out on a soft towel. Get a couple sandbags and place them around it so you can work on it without it moving to much. Place you foot on one corner and bash it to pieces with the biggest hammer you can comfortably swing! After you clean up call and place an order for an F4 windshield... Other than a Elka shock on the rear, it is the best buy you can make....

seriously, the BR is crap and so many of us learned it the hard way. I had buffeting so bad it would activate the buttons on my Sena headset.... The F4 shield is the best you can buy, it is optically correct and you can actually wash it without scratching the hell out of it. Check out their video of taking steel wool to one of their screens...

The lip and screen add on help a little but they are expensive and ugly..... I had the xscreen and still was getting my head banged aground... Put you money towards something the WILL work!

Been there, done that - it did not work well.

The one they sent for the Blue Ridge is not at all appropriate. It does not match the curvature of the BR screen - it was designed for the factory screen for the RS. At least I got my money back (less shipping).
