FOBO Gripe

I've installed a set of FOBO tire sensors on m Spyder and trailer. They work great and it sure is easy to check my tire pressure now. My gripe is with with their iPhone app. Why in the world does it think it needs location services turned on to monitor my tires!?! I don't want to be blasting out my location to some unknown info collector. Even worse, it wants location services to be allowed for it all the time, not just when the app is running. What a privacy violation!

So far it looks like it must be turn on for the initial install. I then turned off location services and cell phone usage for the app. The app pops up complaints about location services be off but still seems to work.

As a seasoned "Senior" I always get a kick when some one especially if they are youngster (millennial particularly) complains about location services.

Now don't get me wrong - NOT saying this you! But so many that complain have their entire lives on FB, use Goggle as their PRIME email and search engine, and send selfies to Instagram on a daily basis (minimum), snap chat, send text messages (yup ur location is there) and yes use their cell phone for as a phone (location there too)! BTW lets not forget about the "Home" PC whether it be Windows or OS X .

Personally, I could give to hoots who knows my location. Heck it actually may come in handy to save my life some day.

Then again, maybe it's time I get some more tin foil for my hat!

Glad FOBO is working for you. I might add as a side note had one downloaded the program and launched it, this would have been known in advance.

That is not the way it works with Android, It works fine and I never turn my location on unless I'm asking directions/gps.

Maybe that's an Apple thing. I had to take Apple off my computers because it tried to take over the damn thing and even when I turned it off, it would turn itself back on. If I need iTunes, I install it use it and delete it.

Thanks for for the heads up :gaah: Some apps are hard wired with this feature to help with the cost. More adds & sharing what info they can legally get away with:banghead: FOBO would be handy but that is a big :hun: And enough complaints will hopefully make it removed with folding updates. As well as the added spyder pics :2thumbs: . Be sure to contact customer service & make a firm point, YOU WILL NOT BE ALONE :firstplace:

I have a Samsung note II
If I have auto night mode turned on in the FOBO settings it will not work without location turned on
If I go to settings in FOBO bike and turn off auto night mode it will work without location

Just because I want to use a handy tool doesn't mean that I also should just shrug about any unnecessary data collection it performs. I try to set all apps and sites to their most restrictive mode. It's just good computer hygiene in this age of identity theft and data mining. I also note it in reviews or to the manufacturer when I see privacy or other flaws in hopes that the manufacturer will be more careful in the future.

Warning others of potential issues shouldn't provoke snide comments about youngsters or tin hats. Much better and appreciated are the comments from others about how to mitigate the problem or if the same thing occurs on their platform.

I seem to remember reading when installing my FOBO's, that it uses location services as part of the polling of the sensors for emergency notifications.

From the documentation:

1. Location service is required to be enabled for the FOBO Bike App (FOBO Bikedoes not use the GPS function to track your location). The location service onthe iOS/Android system has other functionality that the FOBO Bike Ap usesto operate properly. It will ensure FOBO Bike functions as designed, mainly foralert functions, and also for the gauge pressure feature to work as required byusers living at high altitudes. FOBO Bike is designed to be a low energy systemand does not drain your smartphone battery excessively.

On iPhone you can go into location services and turn it off on a APP by APP basis.
