• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Having the 1330 in my 2015 RT-S, which I bought without knowing anything about Spyders, it appears I've lucked out. But I've always wondered what the differences are between the 1330 and the older engines, what year they made the change, why they felt they needed the change, and if there are any disadvantages to having the 1330. Just curious.

It came out in 2014 it was because we wanted more power and some other things.

LOL, your instant response must've prevented my deletion of the thread. I'd meant to post it to the General Discussion and immediately deleted it, but here it is!

The History of Spyder Horsepower (The Cliff Notes...:D)
2008 to 2012 GS/RS: 106 hp.
2010 to 2013 RT: 100 hp.
2013 to 2016 RS/ST: 100 hp.
2014 to 2016 1330 engines: 115 hp.

On the street: any RS will smoke any RT...

998 RT versus 1330 RT: My old 2010 RT would get up to 97 mph pretty well...
Then it would sort of go like this: "97........ 98......... 99................ 100!"
My 2014 RT would simply go: "97...98...99...100!"
MUCH quicker to 100, and I'd have to bet that it's faster also.

So far, I'm plenty happy with mine living up to BRPs 0-60 in 4.3 seconds brag. Is there any disadvantage to the 1330 that I should know about? Like overall reliability or quirks, etc?

They run at much lower rpm levels
They get at least 20% better fuel economy
They're less "Buzzy", and they're quieter
Their maintenance schedule is WAY simpler and less costly...

:D What is there, to NOT like? :D
BRP took every complaint about the 998 bikes, and addressed EVERY one of them with the new engine!

1330 vs 998

I previously owned a '13 ST-S with the 998 V-Twin. I now own a '15 F3-S with the 1330 triple. I love the 1330 so much better. Lower torque, more horsepower, quieter engine, less maintenance and better fuel economy. No negatives that I can see!

Fantastic info!

As I see it...

not a big leap for they have this engine in other products so adding to the line was easy for them to do. Adding it to the spyder did make for some rather painful frame mods we won't go into. I think not everyone could deal with the high rpm twin and prefered the smoother low rpm triple . I don't think power was a big issue.
As to your post, regardless of where you post it it will come to the general discussion forum. When it drops from the leaderboard it will go to the forum you posted it for or the admin will send it there.

Did it decrease the clearance, by any chance, to the insane 4.5" it is now? I've never noticed duplicate thread titles among the forums, so this is news to me. Thanks!

Hello

I have a 2010 rt-s. I m very happy with it after some suspension modes. I only have 9000 miles on her and was listening to all the increased maintenance on the 998's. Just wondering if someone could relay the differences in maintenance between the two. I read that the valve check was something many were passing up do to cost and that very few that had it done stated they needed adjusting. Any comments would be appreciated..

IMHO i prefer the sound of the twin myself. Would love the added power but for now she's paid for and will be riding her for awhile.

Thanks

Thanks, however, I did that almost immediately, but during that time a response was posted, which apparently prevents you from deleting your thread.

As always, great visual, Bob! Thanks everyone for your helpful info! Now, if our predicted 5" of snow (already underway) melts before August, maybe I can finally get out there and put some miles on my more-appreciated-than-ever 1330 engine!

Not to brag... :D
They originally predicted 3" of the "White Fungus" for us... and the Sun is out right now!!!!:ohyea::yes:

Salt in a wound...

Oh, our sun's been out today too ... for about 3.78 minutes between the snows. :banghead:

I don't want to brag, or rub salt in a wound, but living on the west coast of Canada is great. It was a beautiful sunny day yesterday, with highs of 75* in the Fraser Valley......hmmm, I guess maybe I do want to sprinkle a little salt.".:roflblack::bowdown::yes: It's supposed to be a similar day today.

It Depends...

I agree with you, FWIW. I also like the higher revs of the 998 engine and the sound that the V twin makes. And my 2013 RTL is also paid for; and it has FAR too many farkles on it to trade in. ;)

As for maintenance costs, you can see by the chart Bob posted above that some of the maintenance intervals are longer on the 1330 engine, and that's why a lot of folks say that it is much cheaper to maintain. But I believe that it really depends on how much you ride. As an example, you are going to want to change the oil and filters every two years anyway, at the very least, no matter how many miles you put on it.

I just passed the 10,000 mile mark on mine after owning it for 2.5 years. I took it to the shop last weekend for "the important stuff", (oil & filter change, all fluid levels checked, lugs and front belt sprocket torqued, belt inspected, front suspension lubed, BUDS check, etc.) and all that cost me just $241.91, which I have no problem with. I replaced the spark plugs and wires while it was all apart for the recall last summer, so I'm good there for a few years. As for the valve adjustment, I believe you are correct. I see no reason to do that on the 998 unless the engine is giving you signs that the adjustment is needed, or the need for it shows up in a condition reported by the BUDS system.

Disclaimer: While I firmly believe what I just said above, and plan to follow that advice myself, please understand that if you have a 998, and you do not do a valve adjustment at 14,000 miles, and your engine blows up at 14,005 miles, ...it's not my fault. :sour: ;)

OUCH, that stings! Our highs are in the 30s and it's still flurrying. Will I EVER get to ride my new steed?!?!? :gaah:
