Dzus fasteners???

I recall someone had used them on their :spyder: panels, I just can't remember who.

I have two questions...

1. What length are they, 12mm or 14mm?

2. How are they working out? Meaning, are they still a snug fit, or do they rattle?

The bolts are starting to get annoying.

Thanks.

OK, I finally got around to ordering some black 14mm dzus fasteners from Kurveygirl.com. Julie had posted here a while back about trying to get the right parts fit for Spyderowners.

After the oil change and green air filter change, I don't know why I didn't do it sooner.

(Sorry, this is one of those tease posts so I don't have pics yet other than this:

I had started to change them out, but the 12mm ones I bought last season were just too short. The longer ones should be delivered this week.)

I too have replaced as many of the screws with DZUS fasteners. They make doing any work on the bike so much easier. I can have almost all of the body panel;s off in less then a minute. True you could use one of those powered screwdriver thingys but when you are on the side of the road and need to replace a burned out tail light bulb, the quick removal of the underseat pan is a must ! Replacing the screws with the DZUS fasteners is one of the best MODS I have done thus far.

The following thread contained much info about the fasteners:

I have had mine on now for several hundred miles and have not had any work themselves loose. I am extremely happy with them.

Good, rleathen, that's what I was hoping for.

I'll mention here in reply to Irish2themax's question from the other thread you mentioned, the more expensive dzus fasteners (for plastic as opposed to for fiberglas) is 'cause they're longer.

We use these types of fastners on our big block dirt modified stock car they will not come off or back off very secure. you can also buy them at any speed shop.

My assumptions are that the 14mm is the correct size.
Correct?

effjamis, all I can say is that I started to put on some 12mm dzus fasteners, and they were just a tad too short. I rebent the clips, but I had to press hard to get them to catch.

After that, Julie from Kurveygirl explained about how they are measured, and that the "working length" is what's key, of course.

So...if it's not too late, the short answer is "yes." 14 mm should do it.

I'll let you know when I put all mine on, but I guess that's the length rleathen and others have swapped their bolts out for.

Hey, RoadDog, this one isn't all that bad as far as mods go...

I skip one Friday night pizza, and I've paid for the new dzus fasteners!

I guess you could try what I do:

"Hey, Dear, which do you think I should buy, those new $1999 Corbin saddlebags or these ten bolts for $32...?" :joke:

Got them installed with slight mod to plastic and clips but they work fantastic. now I am going to order some grey ones for the left side...:2thumbs:

Diggittt

Did you get the 12mm or the 14mm?

I'm interested in the part numbers... I'll be ordering them soon.

Thanks.

I installed some of the 14mm black ones from Kurvygirl last Friday - was a bit of a pain as the clips are far too large - you must trim your tupperware with a knife - that was the easy part.

The problem is getting them to line up.

I tried them for the back splash panel under the seat and it was a nightmare - they either are not long enough or don't line up well - spent a good 2 hours messing with it and gave up.

Unlike the stock BRP clips, these new ones don't have a good alignment system and snaps into the center hole and keeps it in place.

I wouldn't recommend trying the back splash panel.

The front ones work 'okay' - but sometimes don't want to catch right away when turning them.

I wouldn't recommend trying the back splash panel.(???)

Firefly, it's easy with a few tricks. Remove both back side panel. Snip off the protruding alignment teats with a pair of side cutting pliers. Push the Dzus nuts into place. Noproblem with alignment, theycenter easily on the hole. Alignment is not the problem, length is the problem. To adjust the length, you will use a vice grip plier to squeeze the dzus nut clip so as to slightly shorten the distance that the dzus bolt must reach. Carefully use the vice grip ajustment knob to press the spring gradually, do not overdo or the fastener will be too loose. You are dealing with slightly thicker than normal plastic here, and with dzus, length is critical. I did these steps and my spash panel now goes off and on like lightening, and stays tight. Good luck!
