Outrageous Price

Cruising RT

New member
Recently purchased a USB adapter from Lamonster and decided to let a dealer install USB adapter while my bike was in shop for a coolant leak. Personally I don't see where installing this on my RT, would be such a big deal since there is a empty spot next to heated grips, & ride suspension buttons. I realize that a hole is already there, and that the round hole will have to be reconfigured to a rectangle opening and a wire ran directly to the battery but the dealership informed me that installing was a major install and the price to install would be around $240. Wow, I didn't just fall off the back up the truck and hit my head. Am I totally wrong in believing the price is OUTRAGEOUS :yikes::yikes: My bike is a 2014 RTL Always interested in others opinions.

Simply.... Dealer labor rates are HIGH!

It's not just about putting it I the hole. They have to run power wires too...

With that said...

I'm sure that is correct but wow, just wasn't expecting that much. I'm sure I would be very capable of doing the install myself. Sometimes if difficult to find time for DIY. Thanks for your input.

installed friends in about 20 minutes

My friend bought double rectangle usb outlet for the empty switch spot. I used my soldering iron tip to melt the hole to accept new usb socket. I think we drilled a small hole into the frunk and fished a wire in. There was a unused two wire connection in the bottom left corner that was switched 12 volt power. We had the left mirror and panel off that side so we had complete access from A to B. It was not dificult at all.

I am pretty sure that the price has to do with the labor rate. Sounds like they are planning on two hours or so. I see one person on this thread said 20 minutes. They either don't want to install the accessory, or they are trying to milk you.

According to dealer, dealer says the glove box has to be removed for installation. Claims about 2 1/2 hours to install.:dontknow::dontknow::dontknow:

My guess is all the above. I definitely want it installed correctly, and the service tech comment was something along the lines of "wow, haven't seen this style adapter, but should be a easy install" Of course comment was made before price was given .

USB ADAPTER

.....I know you already have one, but I bought one ( E-bay $3.00 ) and it just plugs into my 12v socket.......:opps:....Mike

Hey Mike, are you referring to a round configuration instead of rectangular? Can I get a picture? And would that be any easier to install? Thanks for your time.

This obviously isn't a BRP accessory, and dealers are often reluctant to install items from unknown sources.
They price the job in a manner that discourages the attempt. nojoke

I have a fellow spyder lover near me, and he said it took him less than an hour to install his. I have a set of dash pouches to hold my wallet, tissue, etc. I was about to install one of those USB adaptors and chargers on mine. Then I came across a couple of quick chargers for things such as phones or GPS. I keep one in the rear charging all the time, and the other I place in the small side pouch to charge my phone or other device. It was a cheap $5 each purchase which did away with my need for a USB charger.

(....As PMK below said )....Mine is rectangular with 3 slots, they also have round ones.......You plug them into a 12v socket ....like a cigarette lighter socket .....Here is an E-bay item # 311543276875.....this will give you an idea of what's out there.......they sell them at different Amp outputs , so check what you need......good luck.....Mike

Depends on the Dealer

Not all dealers are like that. My dealer, Leisure Surf 'n Turf, will install anything you ask them to at a fair price. Doesn't matter where the aftermarket piece came from, or whether they supply the parts or the customer does. They WILL take the time to do a professional job, however. If you have it installed while the bike is already apart for another purpose, even warranty work, they will not double-charge you - they price the labor accordingly.

The only time they flinched a little was when I asked them to install the cat bypass. The install was no problem for them, but they didn't want it on record that they supplied it, so they asked me to buy the part directly, which I was planning to do anyway.

I've heard that some dealers will tell customers that BRP forbids them to install parts not supplied by BRP. That simply is not true. BRP has no such rule in their dealer agreement - either written or unwritten. That goes for tires also.

weed wacker wire

I have a walk behind weed wacker machine that uses a 22" plastic stick. I can't tell you how many times I have used this flexable plastic stick to pull wires from one lacation to another. When I put it into the open slot where the new switch would be installed it just popped out quickly right where I expected it would. Then I had a hole drilled in the frunk that I fitted with a rubber gromet for a sealing fit on the wire to keep water out of the frunk. No joke, when it came time to thread the wire it took LESS than 30 seconds to get it from point to point.

It happens with just about anything that you want done (depending on the dealership). I've had dealers tell my customers it would cost $800.00 to install a sway bar kit.

The answer is that they don't want to do the job but they don't want to give you a flat 'NO!' either. So they give you an outrageous price instead. That way if you walk they are happy and if you have the work done they are still happy. Not much for customer service but that's the way some do business.

I'm thinking you are on track with this comment. I felt that by buying this from Lamont, it gives me peace of mine on the quality of switch, and one would think Can am and their sponsored dealerships would be willing to work with products that a sold by a vendor that has such a high standing with Can Am.
