GPs Mountig Question

Hi All,

Well today I purchased a Zumo 660 and was planning on installing it and wiring it to the battery while I had the panels off to install a set of new BRP saddlebags (mor on that later).

The "u" shaped bracket that is provided does not fit the spyder handlebars. Which product (I'm assuming from RAM mount) do I need that will fit the spyder handlebars?

Thanks.

Here's the RAM mount I use. It screws into the top of the clutch fluid reservoir.

Any plans on getting the NMN risers or do you have the risers already? If so, Magic Man sells a 90° RAM ball end that fits the risers perfect. If you don't have the risers, they are a great riding comfort addition to almost any Spyder.

I see docdoru referenced one of my early threads on my Garmin mount where I modified the included mount to work on my Spyder. I had also mounted the Zumo on the right handlebars for a while to accommodate the J&M CB radio I have. On the right, the included RAM mount will fit as is but you have to removed a plastic trim piece between the right controls and the gray handlebar cover. Some folks removed the right controls and handgrip to slide that trim piece off. Others, myself included, cut the plastic piece lengthwise with a utility knife and popped it off. The Zumo worked fine in both positions and the mount was rock solid but I prefer the left hand mount better for operational purposes. With the NMN risers and the 90° RAM ball end, I was able to get the Zumo back on the left side where I like it.

Thanks guys.

I have an SE5, so I cannot use Bruce's clutch fluid reservoir idea or Doc's brake/clutch mounting (that kit comes with the 660).

I do not currently have the risers and do not plan on getting them for now. So i guess I have to cut the black plastic piece like you did bjt or come up with something else.

You could see what else is available in the way of RAM ball mounts. They sell that stuff locally at a Gander Mountain store or you can find it in a myriad of places online. IMO, Its nice to be able to see the stuff in person before buying to get an idea of what may or may not work for you.

Have you thought about centered on the dash, above the safety card ?
Works best for me, but I'm not using the zumo. I'm using the garmin 760.

I checked their website thoroghly and found a 1 1/2" "u" nut that I believe will fit the spyder handlebar without removing the plastic piece on the right side. I did not know that have this at gander mountain. I'll check it out for sure before buying.

Thanks for the tip.

Yeah, i thought about that too. I like to look, but it seems easier to tuck in the power cable from the handlebar position.

I'm not sure the hollow plastic spacer would hold the clamp. It will probably squash and break. Pretty easy to loosen and slip off the throttle side control and remove the spacer. That's what I did for my handlebar mount, although I like the CHAD mounted center position better.

Looking at your setup and I also like the chad mounted view you have. Is that a standard ram mount that serves as the adjustment hardware bolt?
Do you have the PN handy if so?

:chat:

Thanks,

Jeff

On my Chad I used the Magellan mount that came with my older magellan. Just had to make a slight modification to it. Just bolted it through one of the adjustment slots in on the Chad Mount. Works for now. :)

Jeff, I posted this elsewhere previously, but was too lazy to search. The RAM ball on the CHAD knob is a 14"-20 female RAM with a 1" ball. Part number RAM-B-337U. You will also have to grind a tiny bit off the end of the CHAD male adjusting knob so it doesn't bottom out in the RAM (put a nut on the bolt first to chase the treads), or use an additional stainless washer(s) to take up space, or both. I have a fiber washer in between the CHAD brackets, so you may have to adjust the length more than I did. For RAM parts I like GPS City, but many vendors sell them.

+1 I saw a Spyder where someone had done this (clamp a larger u-bolt over the plastic ring) and it messed up the ring by crushing it. Not sure if it held the GPS in place for the guy as the original owner who crushed the plastic ring had sold the Spyder (minus GPS) and the new owner was showing it to me. Its best to remove that ring by cutting it or sliding off the controls.

Thanks much. I will go this way then.
