Spyder not shifting right after oil change..

We changed our oil a few weeks ago and it ran fine at first..we had a spout of cold weather and we didn't get to ride for a week or two. We got on it this weekend and started to ride and it would stick in first and second gear and eventually start to to shift normally. We went to turn around and it just died...luckily we had someone jump the battery and off we went...but it would stutter for a bit and then straighten out. We cannot for the life of us figure out what's going on. The only thing we can think of is the wiring that has to be disconnected when changing the oil maybe we didn't get one hooked back up...please help!! Also the gauges are not correct it says we're going 115 and we may be doing 30.

If you put your Spyder year make & model in your signature ..................... everyone will be able to help you better because they will know which Spyder you are having trouble with.

You disconnected wires to do an oil change??? What model Spyder do you have?:sour:

It's a 2011 spyder rt se5...there were a few wires under the LH panel that we had to disconnect to get to something. I'm really not sure. I'm so upset about it!

Curious..!!

sounds like two problems. One electrical one shifting possibly oil related. It would seem you did this work yourself. There are no stock wires to disonnect in an oil change. Not knowing if you have electrical mods hard to say on the electrics but cold snap zapped your battery or its connections. Re check your work on the wires you disconnected. Shifting can be dependant on the oil type used (must match manufacturers specs) , linkage, also electrical as to the actuators. :helpsmilie:

A Low Oil condition will affect the shifting...
Wiring??? :dontknow:
Nothing needs to be unplugged, to perform an oil changes...

We purchased the oil kit from Amazon and there were no bad reviews for it. It was the Can Am XPS oil change kit(Can AM SE5 Roadster Maintenance and oil change kit). I just read on it and it says for electric shift only do not use on manual models. I am not sure what you would call ours. We shift it with our hand but it also shifts down itself....So what would that make ours??? Please do not laugh at me for that question LOL I am still learning. I can tell in a normal vehicle what is manual and what is automatic but this is odd.... If this is the case and we have a manual I guess we will need to change the oil again. So if I did use the wrong oil dd I just ruin my bike?:opps:

You have the "SE-5" transmission... these are VERY particular about oil levels...nojoke
The actual oil used matters far less, than getting the proper amount of it into the bike.

Very strange. How about some pictures of the wiring that was disconnected. As others have stated, there are no OEM wires that would need to be disconnected to do an oil change. I can't imagine any mod wiring that would run through that area either.

I would definitely check oil level. Make sure the engine is at operating temperature, not just the coolant. Just because the coolant shows operating temperature does not mean that the engine/oil is at operating temperature. That takes a bit longer. Getting engine oil up to operating temperature takes a very long time if you try to do it by idling in the driveway (not recommended).

From your description, you have an SE (semi automatic) model and bought the correct oil change kit for your bike.
In the future it will help if you state what year and model Spyder you have.(RS, RT, etc.) I would suggest to you to find another Spyder owner or dealer that could show you the basics of operation of your bike.

Glad to hear I got the right kind. There are very few people around here who actually on these bikes. My parents have one but they go to the dealership for everything...I am going to figure out how to add my bike information to posts right now!
