• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Slingshot is an Autocycle

For general information I thought I'd share this bit that I just discovered this evening since this topic has been discussed before. This is some of the most explicit info that there is, I think. Here's a change to the Idaho Code effective with the 2015 legislature and published on the state web site July 1. I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes the norm around the country in the next couple of years. It will also mean the Elio, if it ever comes to be, will treated the same. The law also continues to clearly state that the Spyder is defined as a motorcycle.

The SS is an autocycle that will be treated as a motorcycle in most all respects except a motorcycle endorsement is not required to drive it.

SECTION 49-102, IDAHO CODE
5 (21) "Autocycle" means a motor vehicle designed to travel on not more
6 than three (3) wheels in contact with the ground that has a steering wheel and
7 seating that does not require the operator to straddle or sit astride.
8 SECTION 2. That Section 49-301, Idaho Code, be, and the same is hereby
9 amended to read as follows:
10 49-301. DRIVERS TO BE LICENSED. (1) No person, except those expressly
11 exempted by the provisions of this chapter, shall drive any motor vehicle
12 upon a highway unless the person has a current and valid Idaho driver's li13
cense. Provided however, that those persons holding a restricted school at14
tendance driving permit may drive upon a highway pursuant to the restric15
tions set forth in section 49-307A, Idaho Code.
16 (2) No person shall operate a motorcycle upon a highway unless he has
17 a motorcycle endorsement on his valid driver's license. The provisions of
18 this subsection shall not apply to persons operating autocycles.

12 49-2448. AUTOCYCLES. (1) The following provisions of law shall apply
13 to autocycles:
14 (a) Motorcycle plate and registration tag requirements;
15 (b) Motorcycle registration requirements. Certification from the na
16 tional highway traffic safety administration and a manufacturer's cer
17 tificate of origin stating that the vehicle meets the federal specifi
18 cations for a motorcycle shall be required for all autocycles prior to
19 registration;
20 (c) Motorcycle insurance requirements.
21 (2) All persons operating autocycles shall be in compliance with the
22 provisions of section 49-301, Idaho Code.

I normally wouldn't care too much about this issue...
But there are other forums, and other places for it.
I'm happy to describe them as "pretty cool-looking", and let it go at that. :D

Well I think the point he is making is depending on what states do with laws, the sling shot or Elio could change what we have today for license requirements for the Spyder.

In California right now, the sling shot is in the same class as a Spyder. It's considered a motorcycle but does not require a MC license. You DO have to wear helmets on both of them. The sling shot folks do not like this having to wear a helmet thing.
We are expecting this to change soon. Ca. is working on new laws for 3 wheel classes so they are not all in one bucket.

For instance, Nevada just changed their laws. Now neither the sling shot or the Spyder require a helmet! Before this change the Spyder was a motorcycle and required a helmet.

So again, this is a Spyder forum but the impacts of the sling shot might effect you as a spyder rider and your state laws!

Bob

That's all well and good, but this is a forum for Spyders...

Yes Bob it is but did you know that in Nevada the Spyder was classified as a motorcycle - single wheel drive - and required a helmet and M/C endorsement but Polaris lobbied hard in the state and got a new classification, Tri-Mobile, that both the Slingshot and the Spyder fall into. No more M/C or helmet requirement for Spyders in Nevada courtesy of the Slingshot.

So sometimes this information is pertinent to us, or may be in the future.

It's spreading....

because it is not a trike or a motorcycle and states like CT and TX would not register them they had to make a new catagory which will be adopted by all soon enough. Elio actually started the movement in LA where they say they will build their autocycle...

I thought maybe I should have posted this in the Off Topic section so I'm not surprised Lamont moved it. The reason I put it in the General Discussion section is there has been discussion in the past about whether or not m/c endorsements are required to drive a Spyder and the introduction of the Slingshot muddied the waters. So whatever happens with licensing w/ regard to the SS might have an impact on riding Spyders. The action by the Idaho legislature helps to clarify, at least in this state, what the status of Spyder vs. Slingshot is. Since helmets are not required to ride motorcycles they are not required for the Spyder nor Slingshot.

I like to hear about "other" things on here also. We do have that "Off Topic" thread that covers pretty much everything.

The SS has been purchased as an alternate or a second ride by a few on SL, so we do have those who find the subject interesting from time to time. I am talking information wise and not stick it in our face wise.

I have noticed the chatter on the site has gone down considerably the last three weeks or so, I welcome the extra subject or two--even though not directly :ani29: related.

What oil are you folks using during the winter months, for those that are still riding? :roflblack::roflblack:
