• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Have you personally done a valve adjustment on a SE5

Not fun but not that hard...

Have not done the spyder but many similar systems. The video above is great but only for the checking of the valve clearance. The fun part is if you need to change any shims. These are under the buckets requiring the removal of the cams to access the shims. The reading you get from the clearance will have to be compared to the shim size to get a new shim (see the chart ) Make sure you have access to a full assortment of shims available or you will have things torn down till you can get them. Good project for the off season...

Valve shims

Exactly the same process on a VROD. Shim under bucket. Have done several. Measure the gap, between the cam and the bucket. If greater than the allowable spec, replace the shim with a thicker one to close the gap. Put back together.

As the valves on the spyder wear, the clearance becomes less. Are we saying the same thing?

Here's a video posted by one of our Australian wizards.

Thanks, but it is not an SE5. My question is particular to the SE5

No adjustments but I've been through 2 checks with no adjustments needed. I have mine to do this winter. I used this link for the checks but he also goes into detail for the adjustments too. Just double check your actual numbers though.

Thanks, but doesn't answer my SE5 question.

Thanks, I have done several adjustments on bikes using shim over and shim under.

Thanks, I have done VRODs, but I have a particular question about the SE5.

Are you saying that you believe there is a difference in checking valve clearance between an Sm 5 and an Se5?

workshop manual

workshop manual does not distinguish between procedure for SM5 and SE5, even have the same measurements .. hope this helps. Do you have a workshop manual?

:agree: The transmission type affects valve clearances about like having the windows open in your car will affect the tire pressures...
But no; I have not done an actual valve adjustment on a 990 or 991 engine...

I have had the dealer perform the $800 valve check service twice. Once at 14,000 on the 2008 and once at 28,000 on the 2010.

Neither :ani29: required adjustments.

If you are performing your own service, I can see some benefit. If you have to pay to have it done--then I would recommend holding out to about 50,000 unless you notice different sounds coming from the engine, etc.

Happy to add that valve checks are no longer an issue with the 2014 and up 1330 triple. No valve checks required.

Valve check

You will need to order the valve cover gaskets because you will end up with an oil leak like I did .It is not hard just a pain in the A.

Hold the throttle wide open and bump the starter for checking. For removal I'd mark and zip tie everything together. No rotation.
