Good Deal or Not?

Hi all,

So here's the deal: I'm new to the cycle scene. I'm 44, have never rode on a motorcycle (let alone driven one), but I really want a Spyder. I had the pleasure of riding one recently when a friend of mine brought his over and let me take it for a spin around the block. Needless to say, I'm hooked!!

I'm actually in the market now and am looking to buy a used one. I've seen one locally here and want to pull the trigger, but wanted to get some opinions from the experts here.

It's very low mileage to be a 2009, but I'm wondering if there were any issues with the model/year that I should be aware of before purchasing.

:welcome: No issues with 2009's. The one I had was great. I usually stay out of pricing as they will vary for many reasons. Here, I will stick my neck out a bit. $9,000 ballpark is a better price. $10,700 too much.

I went back and checked a few for sale ads here on SL. $9,000 and up.

The 2011 is priced lower that he has. Few more miles . But not a lot by no means

its got some nice upgrades. Its almost a brand new bike. Think you should try to talk the dealer down as much as you can.

Buddy of mine bought one similar with more miles for $9k he had to put new tires on it, I would want to get it for around $9,500 to $10 k if it was perfect

there are better but it does have some nice mods. If you go for it make sure they run the vin number for updates bulletins etc....:thumbup:

Pretty good deal. Counter with $9000, then meet dealer half-way(ish) with $9700 saying you'll "meet him in the middle". Go for it. Your lack of motorcycle experience will actually be beneficial. Took me a month to go from a Honda Superhawk and 600RR to an RS-S. That whole high-side feeling is freaky.

Man, you guys are awesome. Thanks for all the replies/advice.

It seems the consensus is to counter with $9K. My goal is to at least get him down below $10K (hopefully getting to $9.5K). Based on your replies and other threads here, I'm definitely going to ask the dealer to do a VIN check and make sure all of the maintenance and/or recall work has been done already.I'll probably take my buddy with me to at least have an experienced Spyder owner with me to ask any questions I might overlook. He's also running a 09 GS SE5 so he knows the model in and out.

My wife and I have talked for years about getting either mopeds or motorcycles, but we've waited so long that at our age a traditional 2 wheeler scares her to death. She actually went with me the first time to look at one and she almost bought herself a RS right on the spot. Luckily cooler heads prevailed since her I told her to do her research and check other dealers/prices. She's backed off a bit though, and decided to wait but still gave me "permission" to get myself one.

I still think it's going to take some getting use to. Not having motorcycle experience is one thing, but we've all rode bikes before and the whole lean towards the mirror thing took me a minute when I was riding my buddies GS.

Check surrounding area dealers via cycle trader and craigslist for as far as you are willing to drive and ride home or have delivered(I still really recommend in person visit). They have/had new 2014's on closeout sale in this area for $9500...was cheaper than some of the used ones at same dealers.

Is there an extended warranty or any kind of warranty at all on this Spyder (I'm looking at the ad but it only has the original when it was new specs listed)? If not, go lower. Warranty makes a huge difference in any used vehicle, even if it's only a couple months of coverage.

The upgrades I see on it don't really impress me much and might not be the upgrades you would want. Looks like it has the Hindle exhaust (it's much louder than the original muffler!) for example. And a touring height windshield which to me looks odd on a Sport model Spyder. So I tend to discount that stuff... it's not like it's got the BRP Comfort Seat or any kind of upgraded seat for example.

I have seen much better deals on newer models with extended warranty and with far less mileage on CraigsList ... but patience may be required, it took me nearly 10 months watching local area CraigsLists before I found the 2012 Spyder w/880 miles on it which I have today at almost 13K miles (which is still covered under a BEST Extended Warranty till August 2016!). hyea:

ps. I am not and have never been a motorcycle person... my Spider is the closest thing to a "motorcycle" I have ever ridden. For people like us the Can-Am Spyder is an excellent choice! Just saying... I love mine and ride it weekly!

UPDATE: Pulled the trigger and bought the bad boy. Pick up tomorrow and can't wait!! :clap::clap:

I took everyone's advice and haggled on the price and got the dealer down below $10K. Enough warranty on it to get me through the rest of this season, but that's about it. Didn't really expect anything warranty-wise considering it's a 2009.

I did do some digging and couldn't really find much better of deal than this one. Most of what I did see in this range were SM5's and I was specifically looking for an SE5 with low miles.

Have to agree with Michael211_2000 about the upgrades, though. Not really too keen on the Spider decals and foot pegs (I'd prefer stock). The dealer's removed the decals for me already, but I'm on my own with the foot pegs. The windshield I'm keeping for whenever I decide to take a nice LONG ride on it, but I will be looking to get the sportier windshield in short order.

All in all, I think I got a pretty good deal, probably could have done better if I were patient, but I'm not...at all! And tomorrow can't come fast enough. I'm actually taking a half day off from work to pick it up and ride it around for the rest of the day.

I'll post pictures once I actually get my hands on it.

Hey if it's the Spyder you want and you got the price down where you felt comfortable with it, then it's a GREAT DEAL IMHO! :yes:

Even though there's not a lot of warranty, at least there is some and that should give you some peace of mind.... you may be able to buy an extension to that warranty too! Look into it before the current warranty expires.

Check Ebay, I'm sure you can get the OEM foot pegs for very little money and then you can list and sell those aftermarket boards to recoup the cost.

I also highly recommend the 14" tall BRP windshield for your Sport model Spyder.... it just looks right on the Sport models. The original windshield was only 10" tall actually, and looked more like a thumbnail than a windshield to me at least.

Take your time learning the machine, be safe and be careful! There's been 2 motorcyclist killed in the last 2 days in Houston, and both of them died because they were going WAY too fast and struck other vehicles in traffic (ergo, it was entirely the rider's fault in each instance.... and they paid for it with their lives!). :lecturef_smilie:

Licensing in your area

Better find out what type of drivers license you need for those in your state. I have a CYCLE endorsement and that is what is needed here in my state to operate a Spyder.
